Oh hell. He stood a decent chance of being voted in by the veterans committee this time as well.

I go back and forth on that photo: the cigarette, or the belt.

I'd go with the square because that belt lacks a true 70s buckle

On the team when I went to first game and Dad got me first hat (red of course). I remember him, Minnie and Wilbur as the earliest Sox I really knew.

Allen had a tremendously positive influence on a struggling organization. He was definitely a free spirit. I remember Chuck Tanner's team rules didn't apply to Dick Allen. He pretty much did his own thing. He hit mammoth home runs over the centerfield fence at comiskey. He put up some amazing numbers in this two years with the Sox. Then it pretty much all of fell apart and he was gone.

My childhood favorite. I saved that SI. Lost it somehow in a move so I bought another one in the 90s.

Didn't realize he hit two inside-the-park homers in one game. Also, pretty impressive to hit this pitch out when it was sinking down and away:

All MLB hitters are gifted but strong hands like his and Frank's and Aaron's are a absolute joy to watch. Just a flick of the bat and the ball explodes.

Stone had a great Dick Allen story that was told on 670. Seemed like a great dude.

One of the very few White Sox players I ever liked.

I was in Comisky on Dick Allen Photo mug night sitting in the left field upper deck when he hit one over the roof. Never saw a ball leave the park so fast.

Swinging that 40oz bat.

Allen and Bill Melton were mu favorite Sox players as a kid.

And the cigarette is definitely the best part of that pic.

Allen made 540k in his 3 stellar years with the Sox. Worth 3 1/4 mil today, slightly over 1 mil a year. Jason Heyward averages 23 mil a year in his Cubs contract.

I need a baseball analytics guy to explain to me how Dick Allen, Harmon Killebrew, or Billy Williams wouldn't be destroying MLB if they played in this era. Something something spin rate shift something.

Rich Gossage on with Haugh & Levine. '72 his rookie year was Dick Allen's first with the Sox. He and DA lived in the same apartment complex ½ hour down 55. Allen made 140k. Gossage a rookie salary. H & L unfortunately had to give Gossage the bums rush because he was cursing a lot. Shame. Gossage has no filter when he speaks. Would of been interesting to hear more.

Was a 12-year old SI subscriber that year; I still remember that cover.

I like unfiltered Gossage, but some of what he was saying was ridiculous. He actually said Allen would set up pitchers by striking out wildly on breaking balls in each of his first three at-bats, and then with the game on the line, would wait on another breaking pitch and take the guy deep to win the game.

Ha. That’s actually a great old man story, in that it’s so obviously bullshit yet I’d buy that he actually believes it to be true.

Wow. Gossage has nothing on Tommy Lasorda.

I remember talk of Allen setting up pitchers in a small degree. Hawk would talk of that strategy. But intentionally making 3 outs is a ridiculously exaggerated old war story.

You could hear Levine & Haugh say "finger" (on dump button) in the background. Gossage must of thought it was a strictly podcast with the cussing. His openness I'm sure the Score is very uncomfortable with a guest.
