Incredible story and human being. Chuck Norris and Field Turf have nothing on Chuck Yeager.

Looks like he is the books with 11.5 shot down during WW2 including 5 in one day. As you said above, one of the first to shoot down an early German jet. 61 total missions and appears only shot down once. I'd say that is a really nice resume.

Yes when he was shot down the resistance was able to smuggle him back to England. At one point the Germans were at the front door of a house he was hiding in and he jumped out a rear window and fled into some woods with them shooting at him. They had a policy if the resistance helps get you back you have to go back home because they didn't want a pilot getting captured and giving up information about the resistance so he had to personally plead with Eisenhower to let him stay.

I am not sure how official any of these are, I suppose they need to take the pilots word on some of it. Half a shoot down was maybe wounding a plane and getting it to smoke and another guy come in and finish it off maybe?

Interesting fact.... the American pilot with the most kills is Richard Bong with 40. MANY have probably seen signs for the Bong Rec area heading north or coming back to Chicago through Kenosha. Died test piloting a jet before the end of WWII.

His autobiography was a great read.

You can get a .5 kill in a couple of ways.

Multiple pilots have a legit claim on the kill. Bomber gunners where notorious for doing this to the Fighter pilots.

2) it was not a positive kill,ie it limped away smoking heavy losing altitude or stuff like that.

3) hitting shit on the ground because you never knew how bad you actually shot the fucker up.

after he got shot down by german forces, and escaped capture, he was to be sent home. he argued his way right back into the fight. he was well aware he had a much higher chance of dying from that than from a virus, yet he still did it. i dont know why we dont label him an idiot!
