My friend got stuck in there for nearly a week due to a clerical error. He said the worst thing was what they call "the slop". I asked him what it was and he said he had no idea, that it had the consistency of refried beans but it wasn't that. He was usually able to trade his for a carton of milk. He said the milk was always room temperature but better than the slop. Also, his cellmate taught him how to heat up the green bologna sandwich on a light bulb using something that looked like the box a White Castle slider comes in.

I know. I knew it when he was sending out free stuff. I think it set him straight when I told him he was sending it to my brother who was a prosecutor.

I don't think the people here are criminally dangerous, but I think there are some that could be with the wrong kind of prodding.

I fear the lawyers the most.

My partner is in Stateville now. He was moved from Menard. I'm guessing Menard is crazier than Stateville. I'll have to ask him. There's a whole Yelp-type network that these guys have regarding the various prisons.

I visited him at Menard. That place is like Shawshank. Something out of another era.

Joe, can you tell us what your partner did to get all of this time?

He shot a guy over a land deal gone bad. Rang his doorbell and shot him five times while his family was in the other room watching Bowfinger.

Were you called as a witness?

We used to make nachos on Friday nights. We melted the cheese using the fans used to circulate air in the room.

Not in the civil case. I was interviewed by the Lake County Task Force and the State's Attorney re: the criminal case. My mother was working for us as a bookkeeper and she was quite annoyed that I answered questions for the police. She loved my partner. But I told her he shouldn't have put me in that position. I wasn't going to lie. This wasn't some little con job or an illegal card game. It was an attempted murder. I wasn't looking to be named as an accessory. I was almost certainly going to be called to testify but then my partner just pleaded guilty to the max sentence after he tried to pay a cop to have the job finished.

I should also say that I wouldn't be trying to help him get out if I had the slightest belief that he would bother the guy at all.

He also told me the Mexicans would save the chicken from some "dish" to make burritos later on. I asked what they used for tortillas and he said they gathered bread and broke it down and rolled it out. It sounded pretty fucking nasty.

You are a loyal friend. He should have gone the crazy route if he was willing to pay a cop to finish the job. Something wasn't right with him at the time.

There are eight beef quality grades: Prime, Higher Choice, USDA Choice, Select, Standard, Commercial, Cutter & Canner. I'm going to guess it's cutter and canner which is what dog food can be made of and it's not for human consumption. https://www.ams.usda.gov/grades-standar ... -standards

Couldn't imagine one night in jail. I'd offer unlimited bjs to the officer that would keep me at his desk for the night or until somebody came to pick me up.

I've heard absolutely horrifying stories about the women's side of the County. Made the men's side sounds idyllic in comparison.

I’ve been inside a number of prisons throughout the country through my job. Most were federal which aren’t too bad. I was inside a max security prison in Florida that was a bit scary. Most of my time was in a work area filled with prisoners using a variety of tools so your mind conjures up a lot of disturbing scenarios. I think the creepiest active prison I visited was Anamosa, IA. On my drive there I passed a prison cemetery going back to the 1800’s which set the tone. Those old stone structures with walls you can’t see the outside from are quite intimidating.

Last year we toured a prison in Jefferson City MO which really highlighted the levels of cruelty we were capable of back in the day. It held Civil war prisoners and there was clearly no mercy shown. One punishment included a cell with no light or sound which housed one guy for 2 years.

When I was in law school some of us went on a tour of Stateville. Man that was something else. Right off the bat the guards fucked with us and said we would be strip searched before going in. They said that they can control what the inmates do, but not what they say. He then said that doesn't just apply to the girls. They were on lock down which I was happy about. I noticed they loved watching Price Is Right in their cells, almost all of them had it on. We were in there for about 6 hours and there was a weird sense of relief when we walked out. I can't imagine being in there for a long sentence. Nothing but steel and concrete and the smell of a locker room.

Back when I was younger and in better shape our rec league team had a request from somebody working at Statesville to play some games against the inmates. Everyone’s wives shot that down immediately.

My mom told me that she and my dad were part of a group that toured Statesville back in the 60s and she said back then none of the prisoners said a word. It was clear that the guards had control through whatever means necessary.

6 months in Cook County

For what, and what was it like, if you don't mind me asking?

I'll say this. I had a couple of clients that quickly took pleas to serve their short time in Statesville as opposed to waiting on the 45 days to trial stuck in the County.

I am not going into what it was again. It has been all over the board due to two fucking slimebags.

If I was in General population ,it would have been bad but I was in Division 10, the mental health ward. Wasn't that bad, dorm like you where in a room with about 50 other guys. They kept you pretty doped up. They maxxed out your meds so basically all I did was sleep and read. Couple guys I would talk to rest where not worth it. My parents sent some books so I always had new things to read and I would trade them. Plus,I had money to buy food . They only bad thing with that was the guys with nothing always begging. I would always buy extra for the ones I liked so I would give them some.
They only rough parts was when you had to actually go to court. You get up at 3am,take meds, then slowly and I mean slowly make your way to the main pen,sit in a space with about 100 people in a space for 50. before you even get on the bus you go through 3 strip searches. then you get your food for the day,2 baloney sandwiches and a juice. get to the courthouse, sit for a couple of hours till you are moved to your court room. talk to your lawyer for like 3 min tops. Then in front of the judge for 2 min if lucky. then back to holding until everyone is done, then back on the bus. Holding cell, strip search , back to your division, strip search, back into your area. If you are lucky they saved your food tray from diner and you have some stone cold food to fill your stomach till the next morning. You would get back to you cot at around 7pm. Longest days of my life. almost the entire time you are cuffed to another person.
The guards are for the most part okay, just dont act like a dick. I saw one of the nicest ones ever knock a guy out cold for spiting at the feet of a nurse. One guy used to bring a DVD player in on weekends and play movies so he would have an easy time. Then again I was in the crazy ward so there was not many violent people there.
I say to this day,I been in Cook County and I been in a State mental hospital, give me County any day of the week.

How did you end up in the mental health ward rather then gen pop?

Prior history of mental health issues as well as prescribed medications

Plus,I tried to suicide while in the police lockup. If I was more on the ball I could have sued them into the ground not only for the attempt but for what they did to me after

One of my older brothers was savagely beaten by the cops at Central and Grand one night.

Both eyes were closed and looked like purple golf balls. Midsection was purple, and he had two cracked ribs.

He never got paid, by those four cops did when they least expected it.

My dad's good friend Captain Michaelson ran the show over there. He was a big Irishman who looked like a guy not to mess with. I'm sure there were a lot of beatings in that place back in his time.
