A garbage, bottom tier, and irrelevant program in an overrated power 5 conference.

Or the best group of 5 team in the best group of 5 conference which opens up doors to big time CFB offers.

15 or so years ago, the Big Ten wasn't too strong, but the last five years, they've done well in bowl games. Not sure about the AAC.

AAC is definitely on the rise, though. Better than the MAC.

Yeah the MAC’s popularity has seemed to suffer coinciding with the downfall of NIU.

Idk if there is any truth to it.

Maybe it’s just a regional fandom thing.

Also, the late Covid start def hurt Maction’s popularity.

AAC is the cream of the crop group of 5 conference.

Unfortunately, the CFP committee doesn’t want to share any of the revenue with group of 5 programs.

Disgusting.

The AAC list will be significantly higher and that's including a guy like Bielema who left but was basically told to leave by Barry Alvarez.

He wasn't told to leave by Alvarez, when Bielema told him in New York, he was shocked. Barry has admitted that.

Every conference has coaches fired after a few years. Which one do you want me to choose? Since Carr left in 2007, Michigan has fired a coach after 3 years, 4 years, and really wants Harbaugh to fire himself after 5 years.

Are you once again changing the argument?

Weird.
I'm not changing the argument. It may seem that way since you aren't actually making an argument though.

That's a different argument.

He will most likely have better offers than the Illini. However U of I is a better job than Cincinnati under pretty much any metric.

If it were a competent program then yes I would agree.

If you can’t point to recent success then your metrics don’t matter.

If you aren’t winning in CFB then you don’t matter.

It’s that simple.

Cincy gets you to better things.

Illini gets you to the coaching graveyard.

Greg Schiano is immediately redeemed bringing Rutgers back from the dead a second time. Rutgers is inarguably the worst program in the Big 10 and it is still better than Cinci.

The SEC is far ahead of every conference. The Big Ten is as good or better than the ACC and Big 12 with the Pac 12 being behind all of them.

However, the Big Ten not being as good is actually all the more reason that the Big Ten is a better job. You only need a minor amount of success to be a highly paid long time successful coach in the Big Ten. The dream of every coach at Cincinnati is to be the next Kirk Ferentz or Mark Dantonio at a bigger school. That's why it's incredibly rare to see coaches leave Big Ten jobs. The NFL can take some who don't want to recruit but the list is very low for any Big Ten program whereas it's a built in part of the job description to want bigger jobs at a place like Cincinnati.

No.

You have power 5 bias.

MANY do.

It’s probably the biggest issue in CFB.

Sounds like you enjoy watching mediocrity on Saturdays in the Fall.

I grew up watching Big Ten football in my formative years.

It’s why I cannot stand watching it now.

The ACC and Big 12 are far more entertaining than the Big 10.

The PAC 12 is an abomination this year, but at least they know how to play offense.... Usually.

To me the Big Ten is either right next to, or maybe just maybe slightly ahead of the PAC 12 in one of its down years.

That's a pretty horrible way to judge which conference is better. MAC games can be highly entertaining. That doesn't mean the MAC is better than the Big Ten too.

I only watch CFB to be entertained by skill position players who will be future pros.

So if there aren’t points being scored then I get bored.

Happens a lot in the Big 10.

It’s ok your knowledge of CFB is limited to the Big 10.

Maybe watch a bigger variety of teams if you can find the time.

Idk how you can say i don’t know college football when I just told you I watch MANY different players and teams.

Seems like you are running out of steam here, and resorting to insults.

I’m going to the gym now.

If you want to continue this discussion you’ll have to wait a little while.

Best wishes.

Fickell turned down Mich St to stay at Cincy. He is not coming to Illinois. My guess is he has his eye on a few specific jobs and will stay until one of them opens.

Illinois should be a better job but seems to ruin or end the career of everyone that takes it. It is in the Big Ten and also on the weaker side of the conference. It wouldn't take an act of God to get to 8 wins annually and be in play for a spot in the Big Ten title game every few years. There is enough talent in this state and its location isn't any worse than Iowa, Nebraska or Wisconsin.

I can see the argument that Illinois is a worse job because the admin continues to refuse to play "big boy" football and refuses to lower the school standards for athletes down to the NCAA minimums because it is more focused on the completely self-deluded thinking (as no one outside of those who maybe went to Illinois thinks) that it is the public school equivalent of Stanford, Chicago, blah blah blah.

One example, the QB Peters missed 3 games. Yet, he never tested positive once using the Big10 required nasal swab test. He only tested COVID positive using the (UofI developed and required) spit test. You think any other school in the Big10, I'll include NU at this point, cared to give their student-athletes the spit test? Hell, no. Meanwhile, the spit test has done wonders to keep the COVID spread extremely low on campus and the Boat Rower has half his team infected at Minnesota.

Zook was able to get a few guys in here and there. Once the arrests started (and kids realized Zook could not coach), that and Zook's time ended.

I think everyone would be thrilled if Illinois could meet NU level of success over the last 20 or so years. Give us a few thrills each year and SOME bowl game, who cares which one.

You’re right.

I’m so brain addled that after making it a hobby of following and watching college football pretty intently over a 20+ year span I am unable to identify the power dynamics at play in the ncaa as well as strengths and weaknesses of each conference while also simultaneously enjoying the best pro prospects each Saturday.

It must be this limited brain function that has me believing the Illini football program is inferior to Cincinnati’s.

It couldn’t be the permanent underachieving in a shit conference for my entire life.

Underachieving? There’s never been anything to point to Illinois football being a place you can achieve anything.

I'm going off your own words here. Maybe don't say you only watch for NFL skill players then if you don't actually mean it. Maybe don't say you judge conferences by how many points they score.

The SEC is far and away better than everyone else, but the Big Ten is right there, depending on the year, with any other conference.
