While it would be nice to get top line guys from Illinois proper, how many quality recruits does Illinois have (besides, maybe East St. Louis)? Fitzee only gets so far with his guys from Libertyville, etc.

Illinois has better talent on yearly basis then every state that borders it. While you are not going to win a national title locking down the state, you will have an 8 win type team on a yearly basis if you get 7 or 8 of the top ten.

You’re right.

I’m so brain addled that after making it a hobby of following and watching college football pretty intently over a 20+ year span I am unable to identify the power dynamics at play in the ncaa as well as strengths and weaknesses of each conference while also simultaneously enjoying the best pro prospects each Saturday.

It must be this limited brain function that has me believing the Illini football program is inferior to Cincinnati’s.

It couldn’t be the permanent underachieving in a shit conference for my entire life.
I'm going off your own words here. Maybe don't say you only watch for NFL skill players then if you don't actually mean it. Maybe don't say you judge conferences by how many points they score.

The SEC is far and away better than everyone else, but the Big Ten is right there, depending on the year, with any other conference.

Why can’t you have a debate without reaching into the hypothetical bin, and pulling out scenarios that you think help your argument?

This is your go to move in every debate you partake in.

It’s about as weak and desperate as using analogies.

How could you discuss Illinois and Cincinnati without using hypotheticals? We can't have the same coach go to both places and see what happens. You've already rejected my points on similar middle of the pack Big Ten programs like Iowa and MSU and how those have proven to be destination jobs outside of the NFL and Saban. You ignored the significantly higher pay day and exposure and access to the national title. You've ignored how Cincy coaches are always looking to move on and everyone expects it.

What you have done is say that the Big Ten sucks because they don't score enough points though even that seems to be a suspect opinion as they have plenty of teams in the top 20 in scoring in a normal year.

If Cincinnati were as good of a job as you say it is, then coaches would stay there instead of looking to move on.

Big Ten sucks.

They don’t excite me.

Why are you so offended by this?

Cincinnati dc could be worth a look as well.

I was an advocate for Schiano before Lovie was hired. I still wouldn't mind the guy. He's good at program builder for colleges.

Who knows though. Frost looked like the perfect fit to bring Nebraska football back and he has made it worse.

bills followed Rod Carey to Temple and suddenly thinks he's an AAC expert

It's one of those ridiculous conferences that plays next to no defense (except cinci under Fickell) whose skill position players pad stats and then underwhelm in the NFL

No one watches as much college football as me, so I don’t know how Brick can win this argument by only watching the Big Ten.

You could start a Pro Bowl team using just Wisconsin OL. Same for OSU DL. Taylor and Dobbins will be all over pre season scouting guides next year at RB.

GD....

Come on.

You’ve resorted to arguing the merits of offensive and defensive linemen from the Big Ten.

No one except close friends and family tunes in to watch the big boys on the line.

McLaurin was one of the best route runners and WR technicians in the NFL on his first snap as a rookie.

The best QB in NFL history could only start one year in the B1G.

More of the coaches' fault on that one, though what you say is pretty damn interesting. It worked out for Mackovic, but he was six coaches ago or something.

But as Brick said, many bad hires.

I can only name two Cincy coaches. Kelly and whomever they have know.

Dantonio was at Cincy before MSU

Peter Puck should post more.

Appreciate the sentiment.

I think everyone would be thrilled if Illinois could meet NU level of success over the last 20 or so years. Give us a few thrills each year and SOME bowl game, who cares which one.

I do not disagree that sustained levels of NU/John Mackovic Illini era "competent" football would be nice. All I was trying to say was that NU appears to be at its ceiling with recruiting Illinois proper.

Don't disagree. Locking down the state will be impossible though. That the states of Indiana, Iowa, Missouri do not have a lot of talent does not say much. The great skills players seem few and far between in Illinois. If you can get the East St. Louis guys into Illinois, that would be a start. They all seem to be going to Missouri right now.

more than enough skill position talent in state

one of the top QB prospects in the country was at Nazareth (played in Florida for Covid) and is going to Michigan. Plenty of good RB and TE. WR may be a little light.

Anyway, you don't need 5 star recruits to win in college. Get a coach with a system who knows how to recruit that system and you are all good.

I dunno. ND and Michigan seem to get first dibs on many of them.
