Iirc, the funny part was how there was a brief public push to claim that Orangemen was a reference to school/area Dutch roots.

Pretty sure that's what it was, Dutch Protestants have always been associated with orange, and they settled New York.

Orangemen is a racist term for Indian. Even a snowflake like yourself can see the difference.

And fwiw, I'm not really a person who cares about nicknames. But amused by the b.s. claims of old line mascot supporters in their defense.

I’d honestly never heard Orangeman was a slur against Indians. Is that actually true?

The St. John's Redmen, that was an Indian nickname. As I remember it, the issue with the Syracuse Orangemen was that it wasn't gender-neutral and no one was keen on being the Orangewomen or Lady Orangemen.

That’s my recollection too.

I didn't either, until I read about some dipshit superfan dug into family closets to represent for some old Native American "mascot ". One day those dipshits will realize that it's the old mascots that really raise people's ire.

Think about it for a minute moth. And look into it a little. Or ask Juiced who mentioned that above.

The official mascot was a native warrior at one point, until mid 70’s when the giant orange ball took its place. Was not the original mascot though so who knows. The always factual and heavily researched Wikipedia mentions the Dutch thing as well as the name change being made to be gender neutral vs any native thing while saying the old mascot was 86’d due to concerns involving natives being mascots.

Yeah, I'm a pretty informed person, sports and otherwise. If you asked me to guess what the "Orangemen" represented as a Syracuse mascot, a native american wouldn't have been in my top 50 guesses. Hell, I don't know if I would have even had any guesses, I just always thought it was one of those unique nicknames. Astros, Mets, Expos, Crimson Tide, etc. None of those really represents a person or a thing, just a unique name for the team. I honestly thought that was what the Orangemen were, just a quirky name.

I had no idea Syracuse was no longer the Orangemen. What are they now? And no, Orangemen has nothing to do with Indians.

A vocal minority is changing it . I would guess that majority of people either don’t give a shit or don’t want it changed. Moreover , I would guess the majority of actual baseball fans don’t want it changed . Especially in Cleveland .

When will DePaul and Duke be forced to change their nicknames because they vilify Democrats?

I'm guessing that most people have no clue why they are called the Indians. It certainly wasn't a slur. Chief Wahoo is pretty fucking racist though.

I dont think any of these teams change out of some sort of morality. I think they change the day they believe it will cost them a dollar.

Just the Orange.

I thought they dropped the gender because there was some perceived imbalance between calling the men’s teams Orangemen and the ladies’ teams Orangewomen.

I suppose that's fair enough. "Orangewomen" is weird. In a sane world the women could just be called the Orangemen too. I get that Tiana Mangakahia isn't a man but Brandon Boston Jr. isn't actually a Wildcat either.

That’s what I don’t get . The Julie’s of the world weren’t buying Indians merchandise or not going to the games whether or not they changed their name . I’d love to see their data on “ revenue lost because a few people find the name offensive “ that ( if ) they’re basing this on.

In this case they may have been caught trying to half-step

A lot of people love the old Indian logo and probably were resistant to the new C logo gear. On the other hand, people who think Indians is offensive are not going to buy gear because the logo is gone. So they essentially alienated both sides of the debate.

The logo is certainly offensive by any reasonable standard.

if orange is related the dutch orange, then irish catholics should be claiming their piece of the victim outrage for the atrocities of William of Orange and the orangemen who honor his legacy

ND v. Syracuse should take on greater meaning.

I think I said it before but I think a great name would be the Hussars. It is unique, honors cleveland's polish community and looks cool

So it's not because of the thriving citrus tree farms in upstate New York?

It's not jersey sales that cost them.

If you're buying a Lindor jersey, you're doing so regardless if the team nickname is the indians, lakers, or dipshits.

The revenue the teams are concerned about are the multimillion dollar corporate sponsorship deals.
