If he can use the context of minimal fans in the seats to cover ass for shedding millions of dollars right before a work stoppage, I think he might be intrigued. Load up on guys without MLB service time and thus not in the union.

You think they will execute a trade that moves Darvish, KB, and Schwarber?

I think they should move Hendricks too If they can find a suitable package, but he seems to close to the front office on a personal level. But who knows.

I wouldnt trade Hendricks because I think that's a guy who ages well and could very well pitch into his late 30s effectively.

I think they will trade Darvish in July. Schwarber probably gets nontendered or traded to a team like the Orioles for a few AA lottery tickets. KB, I have no idea. I keep on thinking that they might just non tender him and tell Boras to go fuck himself. $20M plus Schwarber's $6M could buy them a LF, DH, and a RH 4th OF all on one year deals and still have room to trim payroll.

Non-tender KB when? Before the season starts? Are you saying they won’t try and get something for him? I’m confused

I think they will try to trade him. But what if December 2 comes and there is no market for him? Do you risk him getting $20M in arbitration to then have him hit .206/.315/.440?

I don't know. I think you have to hold him and pray, but I don't think those types of bets are how old man Ricketts (not little Tommy) made his money.

I'm just not sure either way, but I don't think there is a trade market for him until he strings together six good weeks at the plate.

If you go to baseball reddit, there is a shitload of fans from other teams already saying how good a fit any of the cubs would be on their team. I hope that's the thinking as well w/ the GMs. KB is still well thought of outside of cubdom.

Other fans imagining how are pieces would fit is very different than what opposing GMs are willing to give up in return.

It’s crazy how little value KB has on the trade market. One year of control. Abysmal trends and everyone knows him and his agent will try to squeeze every dollar out of his eventual free agency.

New GM. Wrigley landmark tax breaks. Some positives to help start this new era. Trading guys after career down years seems pointless, if their value is also possibly temporarily low.

I think that Atlanta is a better fit. They have a history of giving high priced FA types 1 year deals, and they have lots of young starters so they can pick one and a lottery ticket AA guy to make a deal, with the Cubs retaining a little salary if needed.

The Nationals are just posturing to try and lower DJLM's price or have a backup if he stays with the Yankees.

With McCann off the market, Contreras is the piece that will fetch the best package. Especially to an AL team with a DH by committee where he can split his time.

Toronto has a young catcher prospect in Alejandro Kirk who played a little in MLB this year, and their #1 draft pick from 2018 (Jordan Groshans) would have played at AA last year at SS but is likely a 3B. They would immediately become the Cubs top two prospects.

Tampa desperately needs a catcher. If the Cubs clear Bryant's salary, do they give up Snell?

I don’t read most Cubs threads, but do you guys actually want KB gone? I get the production issues and injury history, but he’s a home grown ROY, MVP and World Series winner.

Why root for a GM to make some type of ‘smart’ move to get rid of a guy who’s done more for the franchise than maybe anybody in its history?

No. He has minimum value right now. Wait until trade deadline. If you are in it, keep him and if not you can dump for whatever trash you would get right now.

I can't help it, but I look at Heyward and Bryant and see two guys whose hitting fell apart after getting hit in the head with a pitch. If their vision gets affected even a miniscule amount, does that hand eye coordination ever get back to All Star levels?

There is zero chance they are legitimately “in it” at the deadline.

This is a 80 win team

Cubs aren’t getting shit for him either way. They screwed the pooch on this already.

Flip him now and teams have him for a full year.

Wait til the deadline, maybe cubs get lucky and a desperate team over-pays.

Both rationales suck. The team waited too long.

Bryant is young cost controlled (for a bit) and can produce. That said, the next Cubs team that is a 95+ win team will not have Bryant on it one way or another.

Might as well trade him for two Rick Vaughn’s and one sixteen year old SS that weighs 125 LBS.

He isn't really that young, he's 29. He's soft as shit. I am just tired of seeing the same guys struggling to score every year.

Jason Heyward from today's Tribune:
"As far as I know, I’m still going to be here. I have a lot of say so in that. I want to be here. I want to continue to grow in this organization as they accepted me. I think we can do some special things here."

Heyward's quotes are gloriously nonsensical double talk. A 253 332 388 721 90 guy in his Cubs career. The average MLB ops is what 740? That counts NL pitchers. Owed 60+ mil next 3 years. He is one of the top 5 reasons of no multiple WS titles. Do special things? His remaining 3 years will be a nightmare for the a decimated Cubs franchise.

When the Cubs signed Heyward, my buddy said it would be a bad deal, I told him he was wrong.

Heyward would have been a nice signing at 10-12m x 6 years. 21m x 8 was obscene.

He is set to make somewhere around 20 mil this year. There is nothing cost controlled about him.

on top of it all, Theo signed him to be the team's CF. A portion of his value was lost before he ever played his first game as a Cub.

I really don't like the strikeout percentage at that price point. I'd rather make the Rays throw in a good prospect to unload Kevin Kiermeier's salary for the next two years, and start Kiermeier 90 games a year in CF and pick up a corner guy to start 90 in LF, and play Happ 145 games between CF/LF.

I believe the definition here is a major league starter who some teams may want as compared to the rule 5 guy that has been the only acquisition of the off season.
