What team is signing a guy who is a bottom 16 QB? Not a team with a worse QB. Why would they? What is the potential gain? Further - why would Mitch sign a 1 year deal in that situation? That’s pressure to perform for the next contract. A multi-year contract as a back-up for a good but aging QB is perfect. Good, guaranteed money with minimal pressure is ideal for Mitch.

Well your first two sentences basically decribed TN trading for Tanehill w/ 1 year left on his deal with Mariota as a starter and it worked out well for them so far.

The answers to your last two questions are fairly obvious - you always bet on talent and draft capital pedigree when it's cheap to do so and costs nothing in terms of opportunity cost.

Because he's gonna have no choice. That's why he signs a one year deal.

At tops 2 years, where they can cut him after year one with a very small cap hit.

We’ll see I guess. I don’t see it going that way at all.

That's fair but literally nobody saw Tanehill becoming a top 8 QB in the league either and it's a year plus he's been a top 5-8 one now. You never know with some of these guys. That's why you take the shot when it's cheap to do so.

Yeah but Tannehill is an anomaly. Might as well take a former bagboy hoping for the next Kurt Warner.

Nah. I know thats a joke but not the same thing at all. Betting on talent + draft capital on underachievers that cost the same or less as Chase Daniel is always a good idea. There's no downside and the upside is significantly higher than signing an old backup for the same money.

Plus, There's a good argument to be made that Nagy doesn't know what the fuck he's doing offensively, even more of a case to take a cheap shot on Mitch. But ultimately it comes down to theres literally close to zero downside in doing it.

Yep. That's my entire point with this Mitch thing.

No downside. Maybe an upside.

Or get an older reject with less up an upside and more money.

It's common sense to me to bring Mitch back.

For those that say he wouldn't come back, cuz he's pissed, I'm not sure about that. The Bears will be the best chance for him to start next year. That's all he cares about.

All you guys saying "bring back Mitch for another year" should start a book club with Hub Arkush and discuss your feelings. Get rid of the bum. He sucks!

Sure but is that the answer? Is the D still going to be good enough to carry a middle of the road QB? Maybe they can sign Stafford in which case that plan makes sense.

I think it would take at least a 1st and probably more to get Stafford from the Lions

I thought Nick Foles was good.

Frankly, I'm still mystified. I've rewatched the Super Bowl with the Patriots and I'm convinced the only change with him is much less mobility, which then whittles down what the defense has to worry about with him. He never was incredibly accurate nor did he throw the ball on a line.

You're an idiot if you think (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky is better than Foles. (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with his passes.

How many Superbowls has (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky won? How many times has he beaten Brady?

One web-site (NFL Spinzone) had the Bears as the number 1 landing spot followed by Indy. The problem with that is it requires the Lions to outright release Stafford, which doesn't seem likely. That said, Indy would make a lot of sense given the strength of their defense. They would immediately become a contender with a productive QB.

It would be INSANE for Detroit to release Stafford. Why is that even being mentioned as a possibility?

Yet (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky has a higher Completion Percentage and only .1 less Yards Per Attempt.

The Bears don't get a Super Bowl ring because Foles was good once.

I agree it's unlikely but the reason - as it often is - is the salary cap. Per Mike Florio...

"Stafford has a $9.5 million base salary and a $500,000 workout bonus, pushing his total compensation for 2021 to $20 million. The fact that half of the money comes due so early (on March 21 the Lions will owe Stafford a $10 million roster bonus) forces a quick decision by the Lions, preventing them from keeping Stafford and his family in limbo. "Trading Stafford would avoid the $20 million in cash and cap obligation for 2021, but it would trigger a $24.85 million cap charge for 2021. Cutting him with a post-June 1 designation eventually would spread the consequences over two years, with $14.95 million landing in 2021 and the remaining $9.9 million hitting in 2022." Should the Lions choose to keep Stafford and not restructure his contract, he’d carry a cap hit of $34.95 million.

 Florio's a dumbass though.

Stafford's a top 12-15 QB. They can get a pretty nice return for him. It still makes absolutely no sense at all to cut him over those cap numbers.

Detroit has a history of thinking they are better than they actually are. They fired Caldwell with a winning record. They think they can do better than Stafford. They forgot how bad it is with a completely incompetent QB. Maybe they will take Mitch off our hands.

No, you shut the fuck up. It's dumb asses like you, clinging on some dim hope that (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky might be good some day, that have ruined this season again for Bears fans, in that we have had to watch this ineptitude with the offense week after week. I refuse to any more and am done as a Bears fan until they get rid of (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky for good. He's nothing but a gigantic bust and an embarrassment for the organization.

The only reason you are even relevant here is because the Bears have been so bad against the Packers. Your GB fandom is nothing but a sorry gimmick.

Yeah, it’s my fault your coach is a dumbass and benched the superior QB for the inferior one and ranked your season. Good call.
