And reduce the number of bowls to make them more important. I don’t think anyone needs the music city bowl or motor season or the one in Boise.

Just go back to no playoffs and just big bowl games. The playoffs haven’t made college football any better than it was in the 80s. College basketball can keep the Cinderella stories. College football is about powerhouses.

I agreed with that until I remembered the farce when Georgia Tech and later Michigan won split national titles. Knock out all bowls before Christmas, every one in a cold weather city (& the Peach Bowl) and stick to the current setup.

The Poulan Weed Eater bowl was an abomination 30 years ago. Now they're reduced to gimmicky, irrelevant games in baseball stadiums.

I’ll always cherish my time spent watching the tangerine bowl and never accept the change to a the Cheez-it bowl.

I strongly believe the power 5 schools that are all represented on the playoff committee do not want to expand the playoff to 8 teams solely because they don’t want to share the $$$ with the group of 5 schools.

They don’t want any group of 5 school to have extra revenue to improve facilities, and help with recruiting.

They don’t want more group of 5 teams that can knock off their power 5 programs year after year.

It’s a joke.

The P5 are more likely to break away from the rest and create their own division and then go to 8 teams.

This is very boring and redundant every year.

It’s not about putting in the most deserving 4 teams.

It’s about greed.

Fuck the NCAA.

I don't follow college football all that closely, so if I'm factually wrong here, please point it out. But, over the last five years or so, the first round of the playoffs have seemed to be pretty awful, and the title game has seemed to be pretty good. This leads me to the conclusion that there are usually two great teams in college football, but rarely four. Expanding the playoff field to eight doesn't change that dynamic. If anything, I'd go back to a BCS style championship game.

Warren your recollection is pretty spot on.

And what Brick forecast seems as spot on the money.

Emphasis on money.

Expanding the playoffs eventually leads to more 5 star recruits going to other established programs.

Going back to the BCS system is not a good idea as this would only keep putting Clemson and Alabama in the championship game.

Somebody please explain to me how reverting back to the BCS system alleviates the stranglehold on recruiting that Clemson, Alabama, and OSU have?

That is the issue that needs to be solved.

How do you solve that without expanding the playoffs to get more exposure for good programs?

15 years ago the stranglehold was USC, Texas, osu and Florida. There's nothing that can be done to get your desired result. The song will always be the same

I don’t even want the BCS system. I want the old system where bowls were locked into conferences with a few at large openings. College football has always been my favorite sport because the regular season is the best in sports. Don’t really care if 1 plays 2 in a bowl game a month after the regular season ends. Give me the SWC champ vs the SEC #2 in the Cotton Bowl, give me the traditional PAC 8 Big 10 Rose Bowl, SEC 1 vs Big 8 2 Sugar Bowl, Big 8 champ vs some big Independent in the Orange Bowl, and some scrubs in the Blue Bonnet Bowl.

It will be very hard for a non big program to have sustained success even if you expand to 16 playoff teams and bunches of them are in and make runs. A good coach at Tulsa or Cincinnati or even a lesser power 5 team is going to get snatched by one of the bigger programs and that’s that. More money to them? Great but how does that compete with momentum, history and a giant booster network. I mean, T. Boone Pickens donated how much in Stillwater?

I’d go back to the mid 80’s with 16 or so bowls and people bitching that there were too many bowls and the occasional AP/coaches split is fine by me.

They should just take the top 32 college teams and put them in 8 4 team divisions and have a 16 game season with the 8 division winners and 4 “Wild Cards” moving on to the playoffs. Anybody who do doesn’t make the playoffs get “relegated” to the next tier of 32 teams and so on down until you run out of D1, D2, and D3 teams. Also there should be big halftime shows for the championship games.

I would be happy with 8 teams, 12 teams or however many teams.

But no matter the system there are going to be people upset that a certain team did not get included.

I enjoy the bowl games. I think its a fun little diversion on a weekday afternoon during the two holiday weeks.

I also love the big bowls on NYD.

I'm a huge fan of college football but I really don't get that much out of the championship game. It's usually so far removed from the regular season and butts up against the NFL playoffs. I don't need a championship tournament and it doesn't bug me one one bit when there is uncertainty over who is the champion.

It's like the super bowl. By the time it arrives, I'm footballed out and it is anticlimactic.

I have always wanted 8 teams, Power 5 conference winners, 2 Wild Card Power 5 Teams and the top ranked Non Power 5 team. Also, 1st round games would be played at the Home stadium of the Top 4 seeds.

I’m good with that, but I would only change the wild cards to anyone who is worthy.

I think it fairly irritates a lot of these guys that a team can play half a schedule and get in.

OSU is one of the 3 best teams in the country but they avoided dealing with a lot of the COVID shit all these other programs managed through over the course of a full season.
