you know, if I was one of those garlic eaters I would be pulling my money from the pile the moment they announced that Sam was fronting him 25K. I mean, he probably is the second richest man in the town at that point.

I wonder if Sam was just giving him the money or if that was a loan.

Also, is that really how it works with bank fraud? Run off with the money but if you replace it all is forgiven?

I cringe when I think what would’ve happened to the Bailey’s housekeeper if she were caught stealing .

This place if full of Christmas spirit. Sure it's an American classic and regularly regarded as a great movie, but it sucks.

I didn't say it sucked. I just told Franky he wasn't missing much if he never watched it.

There's many classic films that it's ok to not like in 2020. Most non film nerds aren't out here giving Citizen Kane a spin right now. The movie is from 1946 for fucks sake. Who gives a shit if Boyd likes it or doesn't like it? Why does that annoy you?

It's just joking about the general cynicism of the board.

Fair enough. I'm actually surprised by how many folks on here seem to love this movie. Haven't watched it since I was a kid.

Can't have a gym floor over a swimming pool. It will warp. I put my fedora on and walked out of the theater.

I'm always amused by how many of the actors were born in the 1870s and 1880s. I think that Lionel Barrymore was born in 1876.

It's weird things like that and the last person receiving a Civil War pension dying this year that really messes up your view of time.

When I was about 3 or 4, I met a relative who was actually born a slave in Mississippi.

I was a staunch supporter of Miracle On 34th Street until I was probably well into my 20s. Then I took the time to actually watch the entire IAWL movie. Now I start crying from just about the opening credits. Im a sentimental crybaby, what can I tell you.

That's one I've never seen. It always seemed too syrupy.

The high school pool/gym reappeared in the 2000 Cyrano-de-Bergerac-for-teens movie Whatever It Takes.

Nah, it’s a really good movie. Give it a go.

Sure, except that was a real gym and swimming pool (a high school in Beverly Hills). Still there (albeit with a new floor).

Question is when did the fire guy the two buildings next to the bank to force it to stand alone. Or was it a solitary building to begin with.

I was actually wondering that. I've seen some bank buildings of this size standing on their own, and maybe that makes sense, given this town never had more than 400 Christian souls.

I've asked about buildings in local libraries before, but I wish there was more stuff online. Kind of a lower-priority wish of mine, but it's still on the list.

Historical societies might have pictures of downtowns. Won’t focus on any building in particular but usually some parade shots. We’ve had a few buildings go down in local towns. Sometimes at the end of the row but I know at least one that was between buildings. That was odd.

Right in the middle? Those are hilarious.

I've been to a couple historical societies, and the person running it is always fun, if you catch him or her. In Tiskilwa, it used to be open every Saturday from 9-11 am.

Aledo had a couple crazy old ladies. They seemed surprised when I mentioned my great grandfather had been born there, never heard of him.. I’m like, well his dad died in the 1880’s and he moved in 1906 so this shouldn’t be that surprising.

I'm pretty sure I raced a horse named Incredible Fee at Aledo. What county is that? Mercer maybe?

Correct.

Miracle on 34th Street is a great movie. I re-watched it recently, and I think it's a bit better than IAWL. Can't go wrong with either though really.

Holy shit, really? That's amazing.

It's kind of depressing that some of these actors have been dead for three generations.

I can understand why someone who hasn't seen it would get the impression that it's overly sappy, but taken on the whole I don't think it is. There are several dark scenes as well as a number of very funny parts, and a few of those funny parts are rather adult in nature. Donna Reed is cute as hell, and you even get to see George essentially tell Alfalfa to go fuck himself.
