Finally got a good look at it tonight. Just with the naked eye but still pretty cool.

I think through Thursday at least. It drops below the horizon by 6:30 or so I think.

How close to the horizon do you have to look?

Can you post a pic of what you saw?

I didn't take any pics. Just go out around 5:15-30ish and look to the southwest and you will see it - it really stands out. If I had to guess at about a 35 degree angle.

35 degrees up from the horizon, so that should be just below the middle of the sky, correct?

Look southwest, about a third of the way up, just above tree line in my neighborhood. They go down quickly, though. You'll see them.

Yeah, you'll see them. At that time they are really the only objects in the southwest sky.

I live near a big, field. People were lined up looking. I thought it was pretty cool just seeing it with the naked eye. Easy to spot. Big white spot with a smaller red one almost directly adjacent to it, closer together than any celestial objects we ever see within the city.

Would love to have that kind of cash, but I was born in Hardscrabble.

I took a photo that showed Jupiter's moons. I was pretty damn thrilled. An acquaintance of mine, who has a better DSLR and is actually a good photographer, snapped this one. Zoom in on that.

The best part about it is that my kids get off their devices for a few minutes.

when you live 2 minutes from corn, a large field in the City limits is a postage stamp.

That's Apophis. Named for an Egyptian diety who embodies chaos. An asteroid making a very close approach to earth right now, only about 16 million km away. It's over 350 meters wide.

When this was discovered in 2004, it's initial orbital predictions foretold a collision with Earth in 2029. However, now scientists are saying it will not collide with Earth in April 2029. So they say.

But it's gonna be close. It will skim inside our orbit of geosynchronous satellites. It will be close enough that Earth's gravity is expected to stretch the asteroid, potentially pulling it apart or maybe causing landslides. It will be close enough to watch fly through the sky at night with the naked eye, moving fast enough that land based telescopes won't be able to track it.

Is it all bullshit? Are they lying that it'll miss after predicting a potential collision back when it was discovered? Will it harmlessly skip past Earth and give us a helluva show?

Stay tuned. And eyes up.

Did I mention that this is gonna happen on Friday the 13th of April 2029?
Trippy, eh?
It'll be a miss of 32k km. That is really, really fuckin close.

Considering the distance between Earth and our moon is 384,000 km, yes I'd say 32,000 km is pretty fucking close

What a letdown! Maybe 2068. I'll be a young 76 and still complaining about the NBA All-Star format.

I'm sure we will all kill each another well before an asteroid does.

We're significantly overdue, on an Earth timeline, for an extinction level asteroid strike. By several hundred thousand years.

Shouldn't we use the opportunity to practice moving it's trajectory?

We're not even sure what it's made of yet.

We're not even sure what it's made of yet.

We have 5 or 6 years to figure it out. Just seems like an opportunity to practice for when a legit threat comes along. Maybe send Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck to see what's up.

Honestly that's a bigger risk than letting it fly by.
The most important part is finding out what it's made of. A rubble pile will need completely different tactics than a rock/Nickle solid asteroid.

I'd say the government is spending like that bill will never come due. Follow the money.

It's like the old Tim McGraw song, "Live Like You Were Dyin'".

I don't disagree, but I'd bet on nuclear annihilation before an asteroid. All it takes is one press of a button.
