Agreed, the best way for a six year old to be incentivized to better him/herself, is by getting no toys for Christmas.

Can’t people just desire to be generous because that is a laudable and noble thing to do?

Not sure what worldview you have, but if at Christmas your worldview is that giving gifts to underprivileged families is predicated on some bargain that they better themselves as a result, well you are your worldview are quite frankly pathetic.

My parents worked 18 hour days for six months in order to save up enough to buy me and my brother shitty Huffy bikes.

Id hate to think what would have happened if they didnt take those extra shifts at work and instead spent time with my brother and me with the knowledge that somene else would of just bought the bikes for us.

I think all my bikes came from garage sales. One might have been a boy bike which was not accepted in the early 1980s I totally got made fun of but it built character. Both were Christmas gifts. I think these were it. I got a new pink ten speed in 6th grade and I wish I still had it. I remember when they bought me a mountain bike for college that I hated and put that one to the curb. I saw somebody take it away and it haunts me.
