Among dynastic NBA coaches, he never got the respect that Phil, Riley, or Popovich got.

No he did not.

Didn't a tv station air the Celtics during a timeout and an assistant coach was doing all the coaching at that moment? Something like that. I had heard that that hurt his reputation.

Purgatory. A good enough guy to avoid the flames of hell, it seems, but if I remember correctly, he had a shooting percentage below 40%. Everything counts.

I'm pretty sure your brain died ten or fifteen years ago, too.

He was literally "one of the good ones" in our house: Played for and coached the Celtics, went to a Catholic university, wasn't (at least in public) mouthy. On about my fifth day at 64th and Dante, we engaged in the iconic Celtics-Lakers argument that Blacks and Whites used to have, and I was surprised how many of the Black kids called Jones "Uncle ---." In turn, the Black kids were surprised how most of the White kids despised Pat Riley.

When one of the White kids said something like, "You Black folks are crazy," all the Black kids started laughing (and shimmying and high-fiving). "Don't say folks!" We were like, what? One of the guys got caught up in that a few years later. Still in gaol.

Funny thing is that Riley was on Rupp's segregated Kentucky team that famously lost to Texas Western and Larry Joe grew up playing with the brothers. I couldn't stand Bird for years until I heard the stories about his trash talking. But that hate was because of what he did to DePaul.

 And I haven't heard "folks" in years. But yeah, the wrong choice of words. Especially in Woodlawn.

"Folx" is in vogue again for the truly politically correct.

That would probably not have gone over well in Woodlawn, either.

It's never as simple as it seems. I don't think I knew that about Riley. I knew he played at Kentucky, but I didn't know he was part of that season.

DePaul . . . I don't even like to think about those teams. Depressing.

I hated BOTH the Celtics and the Lakers.

76ers man here!

I still despise the Lakers and have lowered my hate to dislike for the Celtics. I also still like the 76ers.

When I grew up, the Bulls were in the Western Conference. So the Lakers were who I hated. Especially Jerry West. When the Bulls moved to the East, then the hatred for the Celtics was keen. There was this slow guy with an awkward shot who couldn't jump playing for them and I kept yelling, "Stop him, for chrissake. How hard could it be?"

You're going to need to be more specific. You just described every NBA player before 1980.

I never hated Bird. I don't see how you could when there were easier targets like McHale and Ainge.

Jerry West wasn't. He was like a man amongst boys at his position. He didn't sweat and not one hair on his head was ever out of place.

Bird was frustrating. He wasn't 7 ft, he wasn't quick. He seemed like a guy you could stop with effort, but it never happened. Obviously, I had to give up and realize he was a basketball futurist, a savant who saw shit no one else did on the floor. But I still hated him for knowing exactly where to stick the knife in.
