Niekro's 1979 is something to behold. Pitching for a 6th place team:

44 starts
41 decisions (21-20)
23 complete games
119 ERA+
and finished a 3 year stretch with over 1000 IP and 65 complete games.

Did all of MLB have 23 complete games in 2019?

If he was pitching in his prime today, he'd be earning $35M/year.

That's way more than I thought. I would have guessed 28.

He'd also be getting suspended twice a year...or more.

That's an astounding stat.

Who was the last pitcher to throw 300 innings in a season? Must have been him, or maybe Carlton or even Morris.

Without looking I'd guess his younger brother. 34 years ago.

Steve Carlton in 1980.

He seemed old even when he was relatively young. He was pretty old by the time I was baseball conscious.
