Apropos of nothing Coppola has redone Godfather 3 the way he wanted to and to re-edit the timing of scenes. It was supposed to go to theaters one weekend then Blue Ray.

He can edit it all he wants, but he can't fix it. I mean he can make it suck less, but fixing it just can't be done.

The film never should have been made without Robert Duvall and not paying him what he wanted was inexcusable. That can't be fixed in editing.

Also, his daughter playing Mary was also inexcusable. She has shown herself since to be a good director, but she sucks as an actress and that's another thing no editing can fix.

Agreed. And while both are longer movies, Goodfellas seems to fly by.

Goodfellas is the pop music of mob movies while The Godfather is Beethoven's 9th Symphony.

One goes by quicker and appeals to more people, but there is no question of which one is superior art, and that's what films are.

Pop music is an artform unto itself and gets a bad rap

Equating Goodfellas to Steal My Sunshine is incredibly shortsighted.

If you want to compare Goodfellas to Pop music, then you have to compare it to the greatest pop song of all time (whatever that may be)

I have been watching some of the deleted scenes for Godfather 1 and 2 on Youtube. There was good stuff that was cut out.

I love when they do the "Godfather Saga" with 1 and 2 in correct time order and with extra scenes. Unfortunately I have not found a source of stream or DVD for it.

Goodfellas is a true story about the brutality and day to day life of the mob. Karen's monologue at Mickey's hostess party is great in illustrating that they are nothing but street thugs who like to think they live a glamorous life. Godfather is an idyllic Hollywood fantasy about the mob.

Both are great in their own way.

Goodfellas is just a mob movie. You don't come away from watching it with any greater insights into life or universal truths. It entices the prurient interest about the life of a mob soldier.

Both are great movies but its pretty clear which one is better.

Yup

I agree. I've been rewatching The Sopranos and it's a lot more than a mob story. But what makes it really great is that you don't need to care about that if you don't want to and you can just enjoy the quality kills and Chris and Junior acting stupid if you prefer.

This is really interesting for any fan:

Agreed, I have watched Sopranos a few times and now Im watching it kind of as background while working or on my phone and im really not too interested in Melfi sessions or Carmela vs Tony stuff. I know that's part of what made the show great, but just the mob stuff is a good watch, too.

What's idyllic about the life shown in The Godfather?

The last shot we have from the 1959 timeline in Part II is a completely broken, isolated, and alone Michael reflecting upon the decisions he has made and then it cuts to the 1941 timeline showing how happy everything was for Michael and his family before Michael had even thought of following in his father's footsteps. That scene with Fredo being happy for him just moments after we saw Al kill Fredo. Add in how broken Vito was before his death over Michael having taken the reigns of the family. There's nothing idyllic about it. Vito knew this and wanted differently for his youngest son. Vito may have survived the assassination in Part I, but he was dead inside the minute he was told it was Michael who avenged him. The Godfather is a tragedy.

Goodfellas is overrated.

Responses in this thread seem to validate this opinion.

one person said that, you are just reading what you want to believe.

All the others who are praising goodfellas are all correct. It's a realistic movie about mob life while godfather is a hollywood-ized movie. Not bad, but not on the same level as goodfellas was.

Goodfellas was a big FU to godfather showing real mob life and how it's not romanticized like godfather made it. And the production quality is not even comparable. But I can't blame Godfather for that as they were a victim of the time , the 1970s, where production value was pretty low.

I think the most accurate portrayal of mob life is Donnie Brasco, especially the scene where the guys are under so much pressure to kick up that they're reduced to sawing off a parking meter and hammering it open for quarters. The other mob movies make things seem glamorous rather than mundane.

Ex-mobster Michael Franzese agrees.

The surest way to get dudes to overrate a movie is to have a big dose of the mob in it, it's like chicks and movies with Hugh Grant or Colin Firth.

Curious how This Gallery ranks Shawshank vs. any of these highly-rated films in terms of being a masterpiece of storytelling.

What percentage of that praise would be reserved for Stephen King's efforts in penning the tale?

this is such a stupid thing to say. Just because you strive to tell a deeper story with universal themes doesn't mean you are better movie than a movie that doesn't strive to tell a deep story with universal themes. A lot goes into what makes a movie great and none of it has to do with how deep a story you strive to tell.

Fucking nonsense.

Show me a single scene in Godfather that was shot as amazing as the single camera scene where Henry and Karen enter the night club? Good luck..

Goodfellas is a masterpiece in cinematography, directing, acting and every other aspect of what makes a film great.

Godfather is a masterpiece as well, but Copola doesn't hold a candle to prime Scorcese.
