Curious how This Gallery ranks Shawshank vs. any of these highly-rated films in terms of being a masterpiece of storytelling.

Shawshank is the greatest movie ever made

What percentage of that praise would be reserved for Stephen King's efforts in penning the tale?

King's short stories are top notch.

Agreed. And while both are longer movies, Goodfellas seems to fly by.

Goodfellas is the pop music of mob movies while The Godfather is Beethoven's 9th Symphony.

One goes by quicker and appeals to more people, but there is no question of which one is superior art, and that's what films are.

I don't think that this take can be improved on.

And I always stop on Goodfellas, but only stop on The Godfather if I'm ready to sink into the couch.

I always FF through the wedding scenes. I don't FF through the festival scenes in 2. So I guess I like 2 better.

Goodfellas is an entertaining, good movie. Get all the way the fuck outta here about it being equal to The Godfather. We have our differences politically but I didn’t think you were this much of a dumbass.

Goodfellas is a perfect film.

I look at it like Full Metal Jacket where the movie just isn’t very good after Hartman dies , same for Goodfellas when Pesci gets it. Last 3rd just isn’t as good

Same is true of Scarface. Until the end.

And I type this from the couch I've sunken into for the last 75 minutes whilst watching the Godfather.

I kind of look at the last part of the movie as you're experiencing the downturn with Henry it's not as fun as the first 75% but it kind of works for me

As it should. It's the most important part of the movie. The "code" of the mob doesn't mean a damn thing when your ass is on the line. That's kind of the whole point of the movie. The romanticized version of the mob in The Godfather where the rank and file take their secrets to the grave or take a bullet for Vito is just fantasy. Henry Hill is more realistic than Frank Pentangeli. None of those guys would kill themselves for "Cosa Nostra". That's what made Goodfellas great.

Which is a better movie? I don't know. I love them both so much.

it's two bit analysis he heard being babbled by some film school student that he's regurgitating. I cannot tell how many times I have heard about that night club entry shot.

just one piece of refutation: Marlon Brando won best actor and three others were nominated for best supporting actor. Acting in The Godfather being a comparative weakness between the two movies is an assertion lacking in proof.

I could take shakes analysis piece by piece if it were worth the effort.

The story is the skeleton upon which everything else is hung.

I think the most accurate portrayal of mob life is Donnie Brasco, especially the scene where the guys are under so much pressure to kick up that they're reduced to sawing off a parking meter and hammering it open for quarters. The other mob movies make things seem glamorous rather than mundane.

Exactly. The Sopranos always had to be careful about existing in the same universe as Goodfellas for obvious casting reasons, but it was another evolution. Goodfellas rebuked The Godfather by saying that mob life wasn't romantic or operatic, it was gruesome and coarse and heartless. The Sopranos affirmed that it was all those things, but also crushingly banal and full of idiots who probably dropped out of high school. All three are great in their own right, of course, and I see no reason to make a pissing contest of them.

I've always understood Pts. 1 & 2 as one movie, for whatever it's worth. 3? ehh.

It's so ridiculous it's great. Apparently the DVD has drunk Ben Affleck commentary mocking it. "wouldn't it be easier to train astronauts to mine than train miners to be astronauts?"

OK, dude. Still waiting for you to spit out one syllable of original thought on the subject.

I'm not going to sit here pretending to know the craft and comment on the mechanics of a shot. The Vito Coleone shooting scene, looks and sounds pretty good to me but I couldn't judge its superiority or inferiority from the creator's perspective. I am skeptical of your ability to do so either but maybe you took some 101 class that provides you a couple of talking points.

Since you want to attack acting, try to find one performance in Goodfellas that was better conceived, executed and is more iconic than Marlon Brando's Vito Corleone.

But again, movies are one form of story telling. The story is the most critical feature and The Godfather exceeds Goodfellas. This is hardly some controversial perspective
