They lost Food Life and Mity Nice Grill already and now Macy's.

I think it's just going to decline from here as a shopping center

Archive link below to the Crain's article as it's behind a paywall.

This was not caused by Covid as it seems Macy's had started the process of opting out of their lease about a month before the pandemic hit.

Interesting that they will be having a clearance sale for 8-12 weeks, rather than move the merchandise to the main State Street store. Or, my guess is they will move the good stuff and leave the trash for the clearance sale.

They won't move clothing out.

There are containers full of clothing that can be picked up for a song that have been sitting in docks since Covid began. They will sell that merchandise if they run out before the sale is over.

Lord and Taylor has been selling outside merchandise at their clothing closing sales since october.

Who here has been there more than a handful of times in the last 10-15 years? Maybe twice for me.

We take our daughters to American Girl a couple times a year. Last time was thanksgiving week and the place was a ghost town. Garage was empty, first few levels looked abandoned. Even the AG store - which typically has the crowd control standards of a college bar - was very sparse.

It's going to seem so weird to my sons who used to hang out at Water Tower five plus years ago. I'm gonna laugh and call them prematurely oldish now.

It has to be close to 20 years for me. I was there pretty regularly in graduate school with classmates, dinner at DB Kaplan's and people watching.

It's been almost 30 years since I was on an elevator there with two German women calling me the equivalent of the n word in German. They were dumbfounded when I responded in German

Nope, but their faces when I told them I spoke German, in German was hilarious. For some reason they got off a floor early.

 The first time I ever heard that word used was during a soccer game against Quigley South (I think Mully was on their team). The Germans I played with liked to speak pidgin German. I don't think most of them really spoke German. It was sort of like Paulie and Tony speaking "Italian" on The Sopranos.

Quigley had a black guy who was absolutely the best player in the Catholic League who wasn't on my team. He was just killing us and the Germans kept using that word when talking about defending him. I could figure out what it meant from the context.

I grew up in Evanston playing with Haitian and Jamaican kids. I'm pretty sure I was the only kid on my high school team with American born parents.

I think you and my older brother were contemporaries and you must have played against him as he was on loyola.

We must have if he played for Loyola. I played my best game ever against St. Ignatius. They played their home games in Grant Park at the time which I thought was pretty cool.

Did your brother have a crush on Martha Klein like I did? She was a blonde teenage dream!

I've never heard him mention her although, as you know, we grew up on the same block. I don't even remember her but she had to be at least five years older than me and possibly much more.

She's high school class of '80. One year ahead of me. Another QAS great from that class is disgraced Fox personality and former leader of The Five, Eric Bolling. He was a bully when we were kids and he seemed like the same bully when he was on The Five.

That's even older than I thought and I don't think you would have played against my brother

I just had a landmark birthday.

Once we reach a certain age, the years don't matter, they just call you old.

I don't think I've been there since the 90s. Maybe a time or two in the last 20 years just to hit the food court? Or maybe that was in the 90s as well? Don't remember.

We went to the American Girl store for my niece's birthday in October, but prior to that, I was last there in the mid-90s.

Would have been mid 90s or so for me as well. I didn't go down to the city all that often but that was one of the spots to hit along with Nike Town.

It's like a suburban mall, but much harder to get to and you have to pay for parking!

I'm surprised it lasted this long.

I remember the early 90s when I was still playing a ton of hoops and would head to Nike town every six months or so to buy new shoes. Crazy how back then you had to go to Mag Mile to find any decent selection of basketball shoes. They had that mini court where you could try them on and test them out a little bit. most people are there for fashion and I'm on that court running shuttle runs to test the shoes.
