I think the Cubs have an idea what's wrong with him.

In what would be a lost season anyway, maybe you keep Bryant, let him suck and then get him for a better offer for a few years, hoping he comes out of his issues like Heyward.

Not Boras’ fault.

1) KB performed like crap,
2) Baseball’s economics changed dramatically.

He could have signed for 200 million plus in 17. Even as teams were already squeezing guy over 30. Payrolls cratered last year but were already going down yearly.

And he could have gotten Harper money or more if he kept playing well. Throughout baseball history, average contract sizes tend to go up over time and by a large margin. This is a very unique period where salaries are going to get squeezed due to lack of fans, while Bryant flat out sucked.

I'd argue 2 is on Boras. He could have worked out a contract extension similar to the Heyward contract, with a no trade through 2022, an opt out after 2022 to let him bet on himself again, and an AAV that would have let the Cubs keep one more player.

DJLM accepted the sixth year to make the AAV hit work with the luxury tax. Let's see if there is some sort of opt out that makes it likely that they'll eventually renegotiate that last year.

The Tatis extension will also be instructive. There will be a good chance that the Padres will buy him out through the age of 32, letting him get one more big contract for age 33-38.
