I have visited most states in this country. Colorado is a good all in choice. Obviously I have started to adopt Wisconsin as my home. I have looked at buying a lot of land and a ranch in Wyoming. Generally I prefer a colder climate and four seasons. I also have a lot of love for the Midwest. So I would put WI and MN as one/two and something in the mountain west as my third.

Missouri opinion : When I went to Missouri this past summer, it is a very diverse state. I visted from West to East and to the south. Not much going on there if you want to live in a non-city but at my age what do I really need other than shelter, food, tv, and internet.

Food wise I would say KC if you're into ribs/steaks but I can see it can get old fast. But they have a lot of fishing areas so I'm sure fish is pretty good there. I didnt try any sushi restaurants when I was out there but I should have to get a taste of how fresh the fish is there.

Maine Opinion : How about Maine?????? I have a friend from Kentucky moving to Maine next summer DEPENDING ON COVID. He is moving to one of the coastline cities there and says it doesn't get as cold around the coast. Not sure I believe that but I told him coming from KY he'll be freezing his balls off regardless in the winter. He said recently lot of people who have left NY are moving up to Maine too so it's making things more expensive than he originally planned some years ago.

Colorado Opinion : . I visted CO like 15 years ago. Cities were fine but when going outside the cities, It had too many KKK there for my tastes. Maybe it's got better now.

New Mexico people, have you been?

When I used to visit west Texas I asked about driving across into NM and checking out the scenery and the locals acted like I was crazy. Wrinkle up their noses and shake their heads and take me to see their local HS football stadium instead.

And New Mexico has oil, but when the folks who call the shots in the permian need to cut production they'll shut down 3 wells on the New Mexico side to 1 on the Texas side. Dunno if that's due to costs of transportation or Texas lording it over NM a bit.

Nevada is an interesting choice. I assume you’re not referring to Vegas...Somewhere specific?

No mention of Utah yet. Wonderful natural beauty. Plenty of places to go nearby and see the Milky Way, low crime, and the Mormons are friendly people.

Apparently you’ve never lived or worked in Utah. Outsiders aren’t always so welcome.

I've thought about this quite a bit. The only places would be the DMV. I need less winter, connection to a real urban area and diversity.

I love Houston and New Orleans, but I couldn't take the humidity.

I got shipped out there as a youth a few times. Straight laced and lily white.

The humidity thing in summer is always going to be the tough thing about those places although I prefer the gulf to the desert. Guess I’m going to need two or three homes.... good thing corn is up..too bad I already sold all mine.

I enjoy visiting New Orleans but could never live there. Houston though? No thanks. The oil industry ruins the landscape and the food is disappointing. Still better than Dallas though. Not a fan of Texas in general. Austin is the only city that isn’t Texafied and it’s become too expensive to live in.

Went there as a yout. One of the first places I felt completely out of place.

While I liked skiing out there a few times In my youth my life long feud with Mark Eaton means Utah is a no go for me.

I spent extended visits to Houston at least twice a year in my teens and early twenties, those memories probably cloud my view of it. Although I have family and childhood friends that love it still.

And my oldest may be moving to Austin next year, and if he does, I'm gone. I'll load up and ship the car then head straight to the airport.

Houston is horrific. No zoning really take a toll, the roads flood at the drop of a hat, there is nothing to do. Plus hurricanes.

In the decade I went to Austin for work, it got totally overwhelmed. One of my coworkers moved to suburban Los Angeles because the commute was more tolerable. But great good and music, and probably a good place to fuck if you are 28, single, and progressive.

Denis, you might like Boise as a place for an occasional change of pace from Wisconsin.

Boise is Salt Lake City north. Clean and beautiful but similar issues.

It's funny to see some of the differences we have. I understood it when Ted Turner owned half of Montana, but the rest is lost on me. 31 flavors for a reason

I have been to Sun Valley. It was cool. We have been searching ranches in Wyoming among other places. Not sure if it is public knowledge on here, but I am a huge animal lover. I would like to increase my dog pack by a factor of three or four times. Also I would like horses and other farm type livestock.

If permanent work from home becomes a thing, I am debating it. However, business travel would make second and third tier cities a tough go.

But, I am very happy in Wisconsin. I actually just bought the open, wooded lot next me last week to double my acreage. I have thought about buying a horse farm up there. Land goes for $1,500 an acre if not on the lake.

I have been the burbs my entire life. A business stint in London fell through a decade ago as did a corporate opportunity in Cincy. I have always wanted to try somewhere else just for fun.

The people that worked for him in the Madison valley were nice to deal with. When Jane was in town.... no comment.

I’ve found one of the hardest things to deal with in the middle of nowhere is the poor internet. If you’re working from home it’s really annoying. The satellite stuff is very spotty, regardless of what they claim.

Oh for sure. I have this awesome local provider up north called Solarus. I need it too because of work from home and streaming.

But if I make a move like that and intend to work, that is a definite must have.

As I said earlier, I prefer the midwest. I think part of my Champaign hatred comes from it being too Southern, ie south of I-80.

Having lived through a hurricane, I vowed right then that I would never live in a place where basic comforts and utilities were ever spotty or vulnerable.

I get that. I read a lot of articles on retired ex-pats living half the year on the Caribbean and it sounds wonderful but I’m not as adventurous IRL as I think I am.
