In its history, Chicago has seen very few tornadoes compared with the rest of Illinois. I think it has something to do with Lake Michigan.

On particularly bad days on the farm and will tell my wife we are moving (usually I say back to Montana as she’s a fan of momtana). On certain occasions I mention out of the country or someplace warm. She sent me a link the other day about places you can gain citizenship or residency with the amount it would cost. Mostly Caribbean (although Portugal was almost “affordable”) but my first thought,besides that she’s calling my bluff, was, but the fucking hurricanes.

According to the ever-shrinking Tom Skilling there’s some truth to that but not entirely...
Thirteen tornadoes have occurred within the city limits since 1855, with a total death toll of 13 people. The most recent tornado in Chicago was on Sept. 22, 2006, on the Loyola University campus near Sheridan and Devon. The tornado touched down briefly, causing no deaths or injuries, then moved over Lake Michigan. Lake Michigan’s effect on Chicago tornadoes is variable. When winds blow from land to lake, there is no effect. When “lake winds” occur, the effect is to reduce the tornado threat.

Most people view of Vegas is from staying on the Strip. Get away from there and it is pretty nice.

Wow, I did not see this coming. I love visiting Vegas but I don’t know about the weather. It’s too damn hot in the Summer and pretty cold in the winter. I’m also not a fan of houses without normal grass. Phoenix is particularly bad in that regard and one of the least desirable places to live IMO.

We looked at moving to NC a few years back but opted to stay in Chicagoland.

I’ve since justified that decision with this area’s access to great fresh water. If climate alarmists are correct, that’ll matter in the near future. That in mind, top 3:

Friends of our just bought 46 acres up there. 12x16 cabin with solar panels. They're building their retirement home on the land. Looks beautiful but I don't think I'm outdoorsy enough to live there full time. My idea of roughing it is Red Roof Inn.

Had an aunt an uncle who lived up in the UP. It was beautiful where it wasn’t run down. Went skiing up there a few times in the 80s, it was beyond cold on one of trips.

Good people, affordable, good quality of life (particularly if you like to be outside). Fresh water access...(which is probably a bullshit point but I’m dying on that hill).

Winter doesn’t bother me a whole lot yet so the miserable cold isn’t a huge deterrent.

I feel the same way about winter but then I’ve never lived anywhere outside of the Chicago area. It seems like everyone I know that has moved south for any length of time acclimates quickly and then forever swears off living anywhere that sees snow on a regular basis.

Would like to live somewhere I could potentially golf year round but still has some semblance of seasons. Also need to be at least 3 hours from the ocean and ideally I’d like to live in or near a mid sized to large college town. Within 90 minutes of a major airport would be pretty important as well. I’ve never spent any time out west so the list is subject to change but I am not a guy who likes long periods of 90 degree plus heat so the desert will not be for me. Ideally I’d like to spend at least a month in the summer back here in WI. Not sure I’ll be able to afford to keep a home here for 6 months and another in the south.

It was 90-94 almost every day in July and August down by me. But the high temps year round are at 3:30-4pm, so the mornings are glorious and I learned to spend the afternoon working in the house with the AC running. Lows are 25-35.

But if you go west of Winston-Salem, it gets cooler in the foothills in the summer with the corresponding snow in the winter. Unfortunately, you are also a longer drive from Pinehurst area golfing.
