Two part documentary on Tiger Woods. It's over 3 hours but it really goes into depth on the complex life he had. I knew a lot of the stuff but it really does a great job of showing just how messed up a lot of his childhood was without sugar coating the things he did that led to his downfall. Lots of people that knew him throughout his life are featured.

How was his childhood messed up?

He was raised from birth to be an emotionless golf playing robot along with some other unfortunate actions by his parents.

I have been contemplating getting the HBO streaming service to watch a few things? Do you have to sign up for a certain amount of time or are you able to cancel at any time?

So that SNL skit from back in the day had some truth to it?

Quote:
My first concious memory.. is my father crazy-gluing this plastic golf club to my hands. His hair was all messed up, and he had this crazy look in his eye.

That was the worst day of my whole life. Yeah, Dad, was in a really bad mood that day. He’d gone to the store to buy a recliner, and his credit card was turned down. On the way home, he pulled over next to a golf course and started crying. He told me I had to be a rich, professional golfer or my mother and him would starve. That had a big impact on me – even though I think he was just pretending to cry.

When I was on the 18th green, putting on the last hole of the Masters, it was totally quiet except for my father, who kept saying, “Ca-Ching! Ca-Ching!” Just like a cash register, you know? He was high-fiving everyone.. it was really embarrassing.

I saw this on the other night but did not want to watch. Lost any interest on Tiger Woods years ago once he was outed to be a douchebag.

is it any good?

So, do you think golf is a game that you can be great at if you want to? Is there anything special about Woods athletically where, if Earl Woods had any other kid he could have coached him to a nearly identical result?

You look at other sports like basketball and football that require freakish genetics coupled with hard work and it seems like you can't make a player no matter how much you hope and pray. Even Marinovich doesn't get to be Marinovich if he only grows to 5'9", despite all the conditioning.

I think there is more of a chance that you can create someone great at golf, but you still need the right ingredients in the person.

If you have the means to practice golf and work out for about 75 hours a week, yeah its possible. There is definitely a mental side to the game that some guys can't get over. Not sure if that can be learned or not.

Can you plant the crazy competition gene? Absolutely. That's all the mental side is. Just hating to lose. All other mental tricks stems from that hatred.

It's not just being competitive. Its knowing when to play for a par or maybe even a bogey. Its how to bounce back after a bad hole or a three putt. Its how to deal with another player who makes Kevin Na seem like a speed golfer. The gallery moving around. The pressure. All sorts of things.

Some guys can deal with it. Others can't. See Greg Norman at Augusta for example.

Compared to many other sports, I would say yes, it's "easier" with golf. If my life depended on turning my kid into a professional athlete, I'd definitely choose golf or bowling before I decided on QB, SS, or PG. That doesn't mean any 3 year old can be turned into Tiger. If it did, there would be 1000's of "Tigers", because we know there are a lot of "Earl Woods" out there. Most of them are just busy creating kids that hate them, but the kids are still not great at whatever the sport is...

I enjoyed it much more than I thought. Went in thinking they were going to slam him but they pretty much told the straight story and had some good interviews and some private videos I’d never seen.

My contention is all that gets figured out because of the crazy competitive gene. All the GOATs and near GOATs have it.

I’d argue there are thousands of Tiger type clones out there on college teams, mini tours and the Junior Circuit. I’m a relatively low handicap player who works at my game but at 45 I am just trying to keep it together. Even at my age there are a ton of really good plus handicappers out there. The difference between very good and tour guys is a shot or two a round. Pretty thin. Is golf an easier route for a college scholarship or something? Yes. Easier to make to the pros? I am not sure you can make that leap.

It's staggering to see how much a toddler Tiger bristled at the discussion of golf.

Earl Woods is basically Joe Jackson without the physical abuse. What a shitty dad.

My thought would be that you could probably take any kid with reasonable athletic ability and make him into Tiger Woods as far as the mechanics of his game are concerned. But the mental makeup is something that you can't teach and there isn't a handbook for instilling it the way there is for structuring a swing.

This leads back into my favorite baseball argument, starting pitchers' W/L record. There are probably guys out there, top college players, guys on the lesser tours, who can get to the top of their game where they are playing at their peak. Maybe they'd go out and shoot ten rounds at Augusta in a week and average 68 or whatever. And Woods could be sore, he's old, he's beaten down, and he plays ten rounds the same week and averages 73. But now you put the two of them in a twosome playing for a million dollars on national TV. Who are you betting on?

Sheer number of kids playing has to decrease the odds. There are kids out there who could be good golfers who won't even be given the chance to pick up a club.

Watched Part II last night. It's basically Armen Keteyian's 2017 book in documentary format.

The C.C. Sabathia documentary was pretty interesting.

PGA tour? Probably not. "Minor league" tours like Korn Ferry, Sunshine Tour, etc...Now we might have a discussion.
