Always thought of him as more of a compiler and being on good teams rather than a HOF worthy pitcher but 326 wins, .560 winning % and career 3.26 ERA aint no joke.

Red Schoendiest and Rizzuto were worse, earlier selections iirc.

My friend used Sutton to throw a complete game one hitter against me when he was the Angels and I was the Mets.

We still don't know how he did it, Sutton was throwing like 40 MPH in the 9th inning.

I had always figured Mazeroski was worse.

There are worse guys than all of those- Pop Haines, High Pockets Kelly, Tinker, Evers, and Chance, Andre Dawson, and Harold Baines. There was a period there where Frankie Frisch was running the old timers committee and all you had to do was be a friend of his to get in.

At first I was like no way when he got in. But now I think he barely makes it.

I checked it out. So maybe. 8 GGs. Shit, I didn't even know he played 2B. Which I consider an underrated position.

I always thought he was weak. Borderline at best. Lot of wins and a good percentage. I'm not sure he was ever the best pitcher on a team.

5000 innings and not getting tatooed counts for something. Deserving. Absolutely.

I think the criticism of a complier (Sutton or otherwise) ignores one skill set that is essentially uniform to a complier. They were good to very good players as underaged players (think 23 and younger) and were good to average as older players (37 and older). That's a very unique combination.

All good/great players are studs from age 24-33, but they didn't have the skillset to be valuable to a major league team before that or after that. I never understood why the skill to be a good MLB player is something that isn't valued if the player can do it for 20 seasons.

In addition to that compliers are often remarkably healthy. So to flip the criticism, people have prejudice against "compilers" because they were essentially no worse than average, but predominately good to very good for 20+ MLB seasons, and never got hurt? That's an argument against a guy?

Yeah theres something to be said being good enough to be run out there every 5th day for 20 plus years for sure.

Its more the old maxim when discussing the eye test for the HOF . When the guy was playing did you stop and think " that guy is a HOf'er." Im guessing regarding Sutton ( who pitched during my formative years of baseball fandom) , that wasnt the case . I dont think he was ever considered one of the top 5 starters in the league in any year he pitched , I dont think opponents or managers were really concerned about facing him but in the end , his numbers are really good and he did eclipse the 300 win number by a decent amount.

I couldn't say he was better than Buehrle or Jim Kaat or Tommy John or Hershiser or Saberhagen. Certainly not better than David Cone. There are just too many guys in that category. I guess the 326 wins set him apart, but that's it.

He's third in career starts, which is obviously a compiling stat, but it's not for nothing. Everyone else in the top 15 is in the Hall except for Clemens and Tommy John.

He got guys out for 20 years. Had a career 1.14 WHIP. David Cone was 1.25. I don't understand the beef with Sutton. Was it because he was a Dodger?

His 162 game average was 34 starts and 235 innings, and he pitched full time until age 42. There's something to be said for longevity.
