Right along with the rest of society. I'm sure it will get better as people as more and more people run out of resources.

I wouldn't plan a trip to Seattle, Portland, or NY for the foreseeable future either.

TV news and the internet are making you demented. Cities are safe. You could walk around north michigan avenue in your finest jewelry at midnight and no one would say boo to you.

I'll be your urban guide if need help.

You sure about that? There's a full on gang war at Lawrence and Kedzie that's been raging for about a year. You really don't read much about it in the papers or see any TV coverage. I know you know a lot of cops. They'll give you the straight dope.

Could be. Or that crime is up too. https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/c ... s/2406120/

People aren't stable right now. Some are desperate or no longer care. Police didn't do much to stop it this summer and that will continue. It's a green light to continue down this road. I don't see it getting better.

The SE side of Milwaukee (Bay View) has traditionally been a fun place to hang out and drink and eat. And the area west of Miller Park and the fairgrounds is not bad for families, stretching out to Brookfield.

Throw in a stop at Kopp's or Leon's, a Sobelman's stop for a burger and beer, a couple of breweries if you don't have kids, and a baseball game, and Milwaukee pre COVID was always a fun place to go up for a weekend a couple of times a year. Then stop at the Costco near Kenosha on the way home and load up on stuff you were going to buy anyway, but with a lower sales tax.

Maybe but I also think that you are overlooking quite a bit of rising crime in and around Chicago. That shooting spree in Evanston. There was at least one car jacking in Westmont about 6 months ago, one in Naperville last week, a woman in Aurora was car jacked and shot, one recently near the mayor's house and one near Sears Tower. Quite a few burglaries by us. I'm not feeling really safe in the suburbs anymore, I can't imagine Chicago is better. And I don't know if it matters that I am safe or not, the perception that I am not is there. I can't say I don't believe you, but I'm not going downtown anytime soon either.

I'm downtown every day of the week and frequently on weekends. I walked through demonstrations on at least a weekly basis this summer. I have also walked around when the streets are as empty as a packer fan's head.

I don't know how I'd be perceived by a predator but I doubt it would be as a guy you definitely wouldn't mess with. Nothing has happened.

Crime might be up a bit. I don't know if it is. Still, the chances that it will happen to you are miniscule. You are the one who is yelling about shutting down restaurants based on the limited chances of Covid, yet you will alter the way you live over the same small chance of being the victim of a crime.

I have been friends with cops since my friends were eligible to be on the force. I've been coached by them before that. They are so reliable in their bitching you can set your clock to them:

1. the mayor always sucks
2. the police chief always sucks
3. they are counting the days until retirement to a cop community in clearwater (i'm hearing more tennessee)

I'm sure there are a few more if I think about it.

"I don't want to go outside because it's too dangerous" but for crime and not COVID is a nice return to normalcy.

Yeah. It's not completely rational but not completely irrational either. All I can say is I don't want to go to cities with rising crime if I can go other places. The covid doesn't pose a really high risk to me even if I were to get it. And I'm not saying shut it down, I'm saying I'm not going to go. Part of my objection is I don't have the choice neither do the owners/employees of the restaurants

We were in/around Detroit years ago for a hockey tournament. The door guy at the hotel would tell us to stay in the hotel til the car came and that the area wasn't really safe ever like we shouldn't walk anywhere even a few blocks at night. I think Chicago could be headed that way, I have no idea what Milwaukee is like or where it is headed.

and before that it was Albany Park and before that it was...I know Sauganash, but the neighborhood has always been close enough to crime that I could find it if I wanted. But the suburbs around here aren't what they used to be either. Skokie especially.

Sorry but in this discussion you are not allowed to discuss specific areas. The city of Milwaukee is a single entity, just like Chicago.

Cops I'd run into drinking along Irving Park would mention the "park" up that way as being a hold-out area they always had issues with. Sounds like it's moved further south, gentrification receding? Quality Mediterranean food in that era, Lawrence & Kedzie; closest I found in Chicago to the places all over Detroit. Used to watch games at Golden Crust, dunno if it's still open. It seemed new at the time (bout 5 yrs back). Everybody that worked there super geeked up on the yay. Usually not a recipe for long-term success for a bar. Buddy caught an std from a bartender chick there, skinny blonde, short hair, severe daddy issues. Good times.

Should have masked up and washed hands and....not gone if you weren't willing to take the risk.

I don't want to shut Milwaukee or Chicago down.

The job is always getting more difficult.

People have less respect for the police than yesterday.

Blah blah blah

The Detroit thing is largely overdone as well. My brother went to school and lived downtown for three years a couple of decades ago. It was more desolate than crime ridden.

The city can be intimidating and I'd always say to keep your guard up. Don't carry yourself like a victim. I have spent most of my life since the early teens in this city center and never had real big problems. I'm not ignorant that something could happen but the chances aren't all that great.

what keeps Chicago cops from going through academy, working the graveyard shift in zone 10 for a year and then taking a mall cop with a gun job in a suburban department? This happens with Detroit cops all the time. dui stops and suburban domestics aren't without risk, but it's not Chiraq

When you are 5 ft tall female and weighed 115ish pounds with a 9 year old and the doorman is telling you don't walk anywhere it's hard not to think about how vulnerable you could be. I'd have less of a chance now that I'm older and weigh way more.

You have a safe little life. Hope it stays that way for you.

if this was the 90's, i was there. and, yeah, it was mostly vacant in the city center areas. if you weren't out in the neighborhoods on the east or west side, you'd have to either be oblivious to your surroundings or looking for trouble to find it. didn't keep me from having 2 cars stolen and getting a gun pulled on me in an attempted mugging walking back from the bus stop (due to the cars being stolen thing).

We've laughed around here about that for years. Most people think that a person like that just may be a cop.
