The city can be intimidating and I'd always say to keep your guard up. Don't carry yourself like a victim. I have spent most of my life since the early teens in this city center and never had real big problems. I'm not ignorant that something could happen but the chances aren't all that great.

When you are 5 ft tall female and weighed 115ish pounds with a 9 year old and the doorman is telling you don't walk anywhere it's hard not to think about how vulnerable you could be. I'd have less of a chance now that I'm older and weigh way more.

You have a safe little life. Hope it stays that way for you.

if this was the 90's, i was there. and, yeah, it was mostly vacant in the city center areas. if you weren't out in the neighborhoods on the east or west side, you'd have to either be oblivious to your surroundings or looking for trouble to find it. didn't keep me from having 2 cars stolen and getting a gun pulled on me in an attempted mugging walking back from the bus stop (due to the cars being stolen thing).

I always thought that Detroit was safer than DC, if only because Detroit was so hollowed out.

SE DC is a trip, at least back then. Spent a few summers in DC and had friends lived near the Capitol area. If you drove a few blocks beyond where they lived toward the river it was something. people hanging out in the streets, not letting cars pass. Like woah, what's this

Philly by far the most bombed out and somehow populated place I've experienced. Seemed like mile after mile of blight but there were still people living in those areas. Whereas Detroit the blighted areas, even then, mostly unoccupied or a random house a block occupied. Also philly and other east coast cities had row houses, one attached to the next to the next. Whereas Detroit built up with detached housing. So pop density was never as great as east coast cities.

I know a few cops. They don't have very good things to say about Chicago right now. There are a lot of unknowns too.

Did they ever?

I think I'd agree with this. Relentlessy rough place. Even the touristed areas were filled with homeless and con men. It's different now.

Detroit has done a great job in making the downtown area quite safe. As long as you can see the monorail you are good to go. I may not be out at 3am in Detroit but that's true for any place.

That last line is skipped over by way too many.

And Hussra, you're right about the problems of attached housing stock. As a kid we lived three blocks away from a 16 square block area of solid apartment buildings that got nicknamed "Terror Town" in the eighties. Anyone from nearby areas wanted most of the buildings torn down instead of getting rehabbed. I could go there whenever I wanted, but I knew the rules.

Just fill up your gas tank on the way in so you don't have to get gas at a Detroit gas station. Even that citgo right off the freeway by Greektown casino/the stadiums people get robbed all the time, day/night, doesn't matter. Gas stations = spot filled with human atms to the locals

Buddy caught an std from a bartender chick there, skinny blonde, short hair, severe daddy issues. Good times.

Looks like they are open: http://gctap.com/ And the later did not make the Yelp review.

Good to know. They haven't said specifically where it's going to be yet.

They are probably going to be too cheap to do it downtown unless they need an arena. Airport area is fine, there is a good Holiday Inn Express on 13th which is family oriented. Out by Brookfield, the Sheraton is large and right next to a bunch of stuff as well as 94. I've stayed at both a dozen times at least.

If you are in Brookfield or around Miller Park, pick up pizza at Balistreri's (either the original on 68th or the larger one on Bluemound, get the zucchini appetizer).

:D too bad, that's the sort of useful info people need

they had an all season patio/beer garden with the large panel type windows they could remove to make it open air, so they probably kept it going regardless of quarantine rules + pizza delivery

They'd walk 3-4 blocks over to the land of ranches and Georgians and export the fright whilst snatching candy bags.

My family has been ordering from Golden Crust for at least 40 years. They normally don't deliver to our neighborhood but I would bet one or more of my family orders a pizza from them every week of the year so they make an exception.

That stadium pizza has been a family staple at parties since everyone started having kids. Two stadium pizzas and we still have no leftovers

They rehabbed it a few years ago and it is much more respectable

Absolutely. But when it's a nice evening in the summer, sitting outside at Bluemound with the expanded menu is also a blast.

Chester is spot on.
Downtown is great. 3rd Ward is great. the Pabst area is great. All safe.
Once you get to the west end of the Marquette area (Martin Drive Neighborhood)....bad, real bad. Then you hit the Washington Estates neighborhood and it's old money leading right in to Wauwatosa.

My former employer backed right into the Martin Drive neighborhood...it was awful.
