That might resurrect local sports on WGN.

The RSNs are safe, it's the national network that is dead.

National broadcasts will go to USA

The local broadcasts will stay where they are as NBCSN Chicago is not part of this move.

This is good for the NHL. All the national sports channels that aren't ESPN -- NBCSN, FS1, the alleged CBS Sports Network -- all feel like jokes because they're trying to be ESPN but can't be. USA is on a tier with TBS and TNT; moving showcase NHL games there is actually a step up.

I don't understand why NBC moved all of the Golf Channels program headquarters from Orlando if this decision was coming. They stated as their reason for moving the Golf Channel as they wanted all of their sports programming together.

???? USA???? I dont think I have watched USA network since the late 80s. I didnt even know they were still around until you mentioned it. What sports do they carry? Wrestling isn't a real sport.

They dropped all their sports years ago in order to concentrate on "blue-sky" dramas like Psych and Suits, you know, all those anodyne shows that are vaguely "quirky." USA always had the US Open as the counterpart to TNT's coverage of Wimbledon but ESPN gobbled up all the slams somewhere around the late aughts. But yeah, for a long time their model has been to counterprogram TNT and TBS, which have always had one foot in sports and the other in general programming, by not really having any sports. They've had an early-round series or two of the Stanley Cup for a few years now, but then again, so have CNBC and the Golf Channel.

EDIT: oh, didn't USA have boxing and Toughman Contest in the '90s? (I think I should make a distinction between actual boxing and "two dudes whalin' on each other.") WWF was always cross-promoting with Butterbean.

EDIT2: some comprehensive oral history of the USA Network is the kind of stupid book that me and like four other people would devour. A real oddball of a cable channel, if you ask me. TBS and TNT always had distinctive identities because of their founder's singular vision and ambition, but USA was always a junk drawer that was bouncing from owner to owner and never really had any concept to it. Paying for extra channels in the early '90s was, if not a luxury, still a somewhat gratuitous expenditure, but all you got for your money as far as USA was concerned was Monday Night Raw before Steve Austin, reruns of the $25,000 Pyramid, and original dramas like Sexy Bike Cops.

This was rumored when Peacock launched and the EPL was part of its premium tier.

I don't thing the remaining NBC owned RSNs are long for this world either, except ones like Chicago where multiple teams own a stake.

I guess CBS Sports Network can pick up the NHL. They don't seem to have anything else on there except March Madness.

Well, that's just it, all the old Comcast SportsNets are owned in some part by the teams themselves (and in the case of the Flyers, they're one and the same). That was the hook to get the Chicago and Bay Area teams (and the Mets) out from under Fox Sports.

It is mostly free but some things need a $5/month subscription. English Premier League is one of them. If they would simulcast Golf Channel live events on Peacock Premium, as well as some of the NHL national games, I might be convinced to pay the $5/month.
