Stunned for a second, but then I saw the "Barfstool". The signature "joke" of Sam Fels. The guy who failed to grow his audience so apparently he now writes for a company that went bankrupt. This guy has been making that joke ever since he blocked Big Cat and I in 2013. He has an axe to grind and it's that axe is down to a dull nub after a decade. It doesn't matter how much evidence there is to refute his claim, he still bangs the same lame drum. I mean Barstool has given a TON to charity. And when I say that I am of course talking about giving him and Deadspin clicks. The only time Deadspin seems to make any sort of ripple is when they're attacking Barstool. If Barstool can bring attention to a company bankrupt of both money and talent even for a second just imagine what they could do for a good product like the NWHL. I was going to pick apart portions of that article, but it's nothing except snark passed off as insight. I was actually disappointed that he did such a terrible job.

Another note on the NWHL: if I'm not mistaken, it's a four-team circuit of New York, Boston, Buffalo, and Hartford. The teams play in community rinks or practice facilities -- I know the Buffalo team played at the Sabres' new annex. So right off the bat, even though any hockey fan will tell you that the game can only be truly appreciated in person, there are (or were) precious few opportunities to watch the league in person unless you live in the tri-state area, Buffalo, or Boston, all of which are fine hockey markets but hardly exhaustive. The league has a streaming TV deal, but again, we're talking about community rinks. Have you ever watched a Wolves@Rockford game on the U? It's a suboptimal telecast, and the MetroCentre is nearly a legitimate mid-market performance venue, not Johnny's Ice House.

So most people who purport to be avid NWHL fans would have to be watching these glorified fancams on their computers or phones, which is no way to watch hockey. Frankly, I think they're bluffing, because I'm a big hockey fan and I know I don't have the patience for that shit. I've tried to watch QMJHL games and I lose interest in about 15 minutes. In conclusion, no one watches this league, they just talk about it and talk about it and talk about talking about it.

Peoria’s minor league team got kicked out of the civic center a couple years back and had to play on the rink we played old man red league hockey on..I think the bleachers can hold 150 people and there was probably plenty of seats available. Can’t remember if it was ice capades, a monster truck rally, a Christian rock festival or an ag show that took precedence.. I’m kind of hoping it we a mashup of all 4.

NWHL thinks they don't need Barstool. People on Twitter keep telling us how the game doesn't need a media company that reaches the under 40 demo because they have a partenrship to broadcast on Twitch, and that's where the under 40 demo is.

Barstool Big Cat would stream himself playing an 8 year old PS3 game as "Coach Duggs" and would get a minimum of 100,000 simultaneous viewers per stream and would often top 250,000.

Yeah, NWHL totally doesn't need to tap into that audience.

It sucked that the Peoria Rivermen got busted down from the AHL because the Blues ownership ran out of money. It was nice seeing that town punch above its weight. Now the Rivs are in the SPHL, which basically is rec-league hockey, so maybe that rink was where that iteration of the team belonged.

Confirming my suspicion that most NWHL talk is more about fulfilling a social responsibility than an actual use of one's time. I'm not rooting for their failure, but their marketing plan has been a botch since day one and I don't think they'll survive being streaming-only.

No one has to wish for that women's hockey league to fail. Even it if wasn't run by idiots, it's a not viable business. There just is not a market for female team sports. If the WNBA with all of the marketing, TV contracts and NBA subsidies barely survives, how is this league going to make an impact? And their marketing plan seems to be only the right fan or partners can support us. That's not a strategy.
