What a piece of garbage this was.

Laughable writing. Improbable scenarios. Bad casting. It really has no redeeming qualities and seems only to have been greenlighted for some weird female empowering undertones. This was really one of the worst movies I have ever sat through to its conclusion.

It was marketed as a horror/thriller. It definitely wasn't horror. It wasn't thrilling. It wasn't comedic. It just had no idea what it wanted to be. I also think it forgot a key element of the story half way through and switched it around.

Everything about this movie was amateurish, which is totally unacceptable given the quality of the supporting cast. Also, the writer displays zero knowledge of the subject matter, treating med school (or any grad school) life as if it resembles undergrad life.

and, when you are casting for a lead role with the words YOUNG WOMAN right in the title, for a character who is supposed to be 30, try to find an actor who actually looks the age

I heard about this movie on the radio and saw the promotions and it looked interesting. It sucks. Don't bother.

I look on Rotten Tomatos and these reviewers write as if it is an important movie

i've read the entire plot recap because something struck me as fishy with the way it was being promoted. i couldn't really follow what the premise was supposed to be.

i think what betrays the "empowerment" thing, and what has been destructive to the "#MeToo" movement is that there are enough *proven* rape hoaxes and accusations that are bogus, for a movie to take such an angry stance with no hint of irony or self-reflection, just comes off as tunnelvision at best.

plus, how empowering is it to just be a victim of something? that's another thing that's weakened the message. victims are empowered by turning being victim into a strong person. strength isn't reliving your past and being emotionally compromised because of it. it's the opposite of that. i know from experience...

so, the script probably should've been put through a strainer and punched up by a veteran writer because this was definitely something that feels more like a first draft. all the emotional baggage without the power of a twist or something to change your views on the subject.

the fact that it's not only gotten rave reviews, Oscar consideration, but also such a high RT score means that this sort of weak writing is now celebrated.

but i've been railing against this kind of narrow-mindedness going back to "the social network" (not deadwork, which is a classic). that movie is a pile of shit that got way too much love. but that's seemingly the normal thing nowadays.

on the flip side, "the invisible man" (*also* a movie about women empowerment against evil men) is a fanfuckingtastic thriller.

I don't care about all that stuff. I'm base. Make her a killer and I probably would have enjoyed the thing...and that is what they hint this movie is in its promotion.

I watched with my wife. She echoed my sentiments. What I didn't tell her is this movie is a poorly done reimagining of I Spit On Your Grave.

Is this really getting Oscar consideration? I haven't looked other than that brief sampling of RT. I don't think I'm off on this. It really is a bad movie in every facet of production.

The “I Spit On Your Grave” comparison is apt. And how was that movie received when it came out? Exploitative trash it was called.

This is being hailed as a modern masterpiece.

Just in case anyone would be swayed into watching this based on Hawaii's review.

It wasn't that bad. Granted, it does have a message that will annoy some people and it delivers that message in a heavy-handed fashion, but I thought the: acting, directing, and writing were all fine. Also, I found parts of it to be frightening. For those of you who haven't seen the movie, if you're somebody who gets really annoyed by preachy movies, you should probably skip it, but I found it to be an entertaining investment of a couple of hours.

frightening, like in horror movie frightening? If so, you have a weak constitution.

name one single character written beyond a one dimensional stereotype, presented not as a character but as a placeholder for an idea

There is nothing about that movie that rings true.

"Frightening" as in it set me on edge and left me there for the entire movie. It made me empathize with: the main character, the old friend she traumatizes, the dean of the medical school, her boyfriend, and even the villain. I thought the main character, her boyfriend, and the villain came off as real people with real concerns and real emotions, and not just abstract ideas incarnated.

You're usually an even-keeled poster. I don't think I've seen you this pissed off since the Sox failed to sign Machado. Why did this movie piss you off so badly? If you found it to be a piece of garbage, just laugh it off and move on. We all have better things to do than spend our time and emotional energy dealing with things we find to be nonsense.
