Add him to the “I thought he was dead already” file.

Great actor. Hell of a run.

The baseball scene in The Star Chamber is one of my favorite examples of his work.

always played spooky characters. remember him as the disheveled intelligence office in 'midway'. charlton heston reminded him that he smelled and needed to bathe more often.

He'll always be the ringleader of the dirty cops in Magnum Force to me.

Mannheim and Mark Twain were far and away his two best roles.

I think it is interesting that everyone pretty much does the same Mark Twain impression but nobody has ever actually heard his voice. They are doing an impression of a guy that did an impression of Twain because he knew him.

I always think of Holbrook from All the President's Men.

Didn't Thomas Edison make a recording of his voice?

I think that was just a silent film of him walking around.

I just looked. Apparently he made a number of them, didn't like them and he destroyed all of his. I guess the few others have been lost to history.

Since I don't have much to do today, I may do a little reading of his stuff. Thanks Doc!

The story I heard was that he actually liked them but he faced a lot of on-street bullying where strangers would just yell -

"YOU SUCK, CLEMENS!!"

"OSCAR WILDE IS THE GOAT!!"

"IF GERTRUDE STEIN WAS A MAN...."

- and so forth. So he just destroyed them due to depression.

The one that really did him in was "DREISER IS FUNNIER!"
