For the 13th time since August, a vehicle has hit the historic Long Grove Covered Bridge. This time, it was a box truck and a bystander caught the crash on video.

This would be a lot funnier if I hadn't torn the antenna off my Benz on the garage door last week.

Some bridges are indestructible.

Todd Bridges, for example.

Humble brag? Or is the vehicle make relevant to the story?

Wasn't there one of those goofy psa commercials in the 80s where some kid out for a lark rips off an antenna from an expensive car and it turned out to be his dad's?

And I didn't even think cars had antennas any more? I went out and double checked the 2013 Highlander. Nope.

It's not a traditional antenna. It looks like a little hook or a small shark fin. It's probably something that could have been repaired/replaced for $100 with aftermarket parts but I took it to the dealer.

Something like that, that's so cosmetic, I want it repaired right. I have a shade tree mechanic who will save me money, but I didn't want to cut a corner here and have an obviously cheap piece of black plastic coming out the top of my otherwise nice car. They did suggest replacing the battery for $400 and replacing the wipers for $70, both of which I declined.

I had some other stuff done though and I couldn't be happier with Autohaus service. There's a dealership within walking distance of my house but I drove all the way up to Northfield because of issues I've had with their service department.

The last time I took my car to the place by my house I was really unhappy. I had brought the car in under warranty because the engine light was on. They "fixed" it, no charge, but within a week the light was back on again. They obviously couldn't figure out what the problem was so I drove around with it that way for awhile as the car was running okay. When I finally brought it back in the car was out of warranty. This time they fixed it and charged me a bunch. I didn't argue about it though. I just paid the fuckin' bill and vowed never to get service or buy another car there again (I've bought three from them).

When I received the survey I answered the questions honestly. I was very unhappy with their service. This is the fucking e-mail I got back addressed to my wife and me. Do you think this is appropriate?

We received your survey response from 2/21/2018 regarding your most recent visit with us with your Mercedes Benz on February 7, 2018.

I was surprised by the responses and wanted to follow up to see how we did not meet your expectations at this visit.

I was surprised due to the fact that I stayed after we closed to take care of Joe when he arrived for drop off, I explained all the minimum factory maintenance requirements that were due on the vehicle which he authorized as well as the additional work. Lastly at pick up, nothing was brought to my attention as a concern.

Based on the survey response, can you please explain how we did not meet your expectations? I take pride in the work I do here and the survey responses are personal, so if there is something we did not do to meet you expectations, I’d like to be made aware of it.

Thanks for your time.

Completely inappropriate response. But at the same time I wonder if you vowed never to get service or buy another car there again why you bothered completing the survey?

Completely inappropriate response. But at the same time I wonder if you vowed never to get service or buy another car there again why you bothered completing the survey?

The survey was from MB USA, not the dealership itself. I believe my thinking at the time was that maybe Mercedes Benz would cover all or part of the repair that the dealership did not/could not fix when I brought it in under warranty. Of course, their position might be that it was a different problem. And what the fuck do I know? The causes behind the engine light coming on are so numerous and varied they could tell me anything.

This was also not the first time that I had scheduled service and when I got to this dealership was left cooling my heels for an inordinately long time before being helped. It's like a restaurant that takes reservations and then makes you wait an hour after you arrive. You have to do better than that. I'm not an uptight guy. But there are some limits. Ten minutes? Okay. But once it gets over half an hour you should expect that I might be starting to steam.

Anyway, this is how I responded to that e-mail I posted above. I never heard anything more from the dealership and I have never gone back there since.

First let me say that it isn't personal. I certainly didn't single out you or anyone else in the survey I filled out. I'm not copying anyone up the ladder on this e-mail right now either.

The tone of your e-mail isn't really helping matters. I'm an unhappy customer and instead of an attempt at satisfaction I'm getting accusation.

When I dropped off the car I was there well before you closed. I waited for about forty minutes before I had to ask the guy who works right by the waiting area if someone was ever going to help me. That's when he paged you. I immediately got the feeling I was bothering you. And this isn't the first time I've had to wait what I consider to be far too long before being able to drop my car off for service. These are expensive cars and the service is expensive. I expect a little more.

The thing that really upsets me is that when the car was under warranty you guys couldn't seem to fix whatever problem was causing the engine light to come on intermittently. But when I was paying for it, it's fixed perfectly. I'm sure your take is that if I was unhappy with the warranty work I should have brought the car back in at the time. I don't have time to constantly bring the car back in when I'm getting the feeling you guys aren't sure what's wrong. That's water under the bridge. I didn't start whining about the cost of the repairs. I filled out the survey based on how I honestly feel.

Finally, the last time I talked to you I mentioned the power window that drops an inch and won't go all the way up on its own. That wasn't fixed either, but I'm going to live with it for now.

Like I said, it isn't personal. I'm just not pleased with your service department and I don't believe that has a lot to do with you as an individual.

I'm getting a little bit irrationally angry at the fact that these aren't actually covered bridges.
