It looked that way up until about an hour ago in the SW burbs, but it has tapered off considerably since.

An hour ago, it was 38F here, now dropped to 33 and heavy snow, looks like wind-blown lake effect big flakes.

1.3" fell in about 45min at the Romeoville NWS office at Lewis Airport.

I could hardly see across the street from my office about 15 minutes ago. Still snowing, but has slowed down a quite a bit.

I had all kinds of things I wanted to do. And then this crap hit. Thankfully it didn't rain like predicted though.

Only a few inches of snow here. I tried to get out and shovel last night at around 7pm when it lightened up but my back tightened up after about 20 minutes so I gave up. I'll try to get out and
see what the snowblower will do this afternoon.... likely not much. I'm not about to try to get it perfect, especially with these temps. Brutal taking the dog out this morning.

Another 2-6" of snow Friday night into Saturday afternoon.

On the plus side, it appears that temperatures should moderate by the middle to end of next week, and we should get above freezing for the first time in nearly 3 weeks!

Below zero for the lows again overnight Saturday into Sunday, and Sunday into Monday. The 22 degree high on Tuesday is gonna feel like 50, and low 30s by the following Sunday/Monday might feel like 80.

It's amazing how 4 degrees is starting to feel like 30 degrees. That -30 wind chill day really screwed me up.

The point, professor, is that a 15 to 20 degree jump in temperature is noticeable and feels warmer. Doesn't matter if you're going from -10 to 10 above zero, or 40 to 60 degrees.

After the Polar Vortex -25 degree temps in January 2019, I remember it being like 15 three or four days later, and I was outside with a hoodie and no coat and was fine.

As a shorts all year guy, all the temps do are dictate the difference between shoes and flip flops, which is usually around 10 degrees. I guess shoes for shoveling snow too.

its more mechanical for me. below 10 degrees is when things start to fail, especially if thats sustained for weeks. makes my days frustrating (because nothings engineered to work in possible situations. its like oh, it usually doesnt get that cold so its ok. or, theres no way it will overheat, its sitting outside directly in the sun and has 8 heat generating motors, we dont need any thermal regulation for that it's fine.)

The cold is fine, even -8, in short doses. After an hour out in it it starts to suck but you can dress for it if it’s not too windy. And this stretch hasn’t been good for machines or water situation . I need about 24-48 hours above freezing with highs in upper 40s and it’s not looking promising anytime soon. That’s life.

Serious question as I am ignorant on the subject but also intrigued by your comment - Is the concern because of animals? Are purely agricultural farmers affected by this stuff or do they sit January and February out?

Purely livestock related. Grain farmers might be doing shop work right now but that’s about it. Usually this is conference and convention season in warm climates. Well.. my conferences always seem to be in Minnesota, Wisconsin or scenic Springfield Illinois so I’m doing something wrong.

How do you deal with the extended extreme cold? I assume you have to keep the livestock inside but what else is involved?

No.. they are outside for the most part. Really the cold just means more food and water freezing. As long as they have the ability to be dry and get out of the wind the cold doesn’t bother them much. When I was in college out west I worked at a research station one winter. I took temperatures outside the old air force suburban I sat in while watching 4 groups of cows. Then I trekked the pastures measuring temps and wind speeds within the fields in various places and amongst the group of cows. It was amazing the microclimes they found and created in -20 to -30 degree weather. But hey, I got 10 bucks an hour.

But machines that we feed with don’t like the cold. We plug those in but things break (they’d break if it was warm too but its easier to fix when it’s warm. If you wanna know cold dunk your hand into an oil bath to pull out a thrown chain when it’s -18 out. Actually don’t. Don’t be stupid.)

Interesting. Thanks...this kind of stuff is why I like the board. There’s a lot of diversity and a lot to learn.

I heard the opposite because of all the snow temps will stay cool until the sun angle gets high enough for it to melt.

that's yet 1 more annoying thing about all this...there have been flurries here and there but not much accumulation of any kind, so it's basically been 1 week since the 'big ' snow, but of course since the temps are so low none of it has melted at all.
