I went back and am watching this series on HBO. It’s 15 years old but pretty well done. I know it’s not completely historically accurate but I am finding this Roman history fascinating as hell. Pullo is my guy in this one. Anyone ever watch this? Makes me want to learn a bit more about the Roman Empire.

Also makes me wonder what happened to Jim Rome.... is he still around?

I did liked it. Read Rubicon, about the last years of the Republic so basically same time frame as this.I knew Julius Ceaser was a badass but not as much as he really was.
Roman history is so long it has a ton of eras and phases. My favorite is the Punic War era, Rome was still beatable then and you had some larger than life players. Hannibal Barca, his entire family,Scipio Africanius. Great battles. If you think Hannibal gave the Romans fit look up Pyrrhus of Epirus,

I find it perplexing that we say and spell the city as "Rome," even though it is actually "Roma." What's the point...to save a syllable? We've switched from Peking to Beijing, and Bombay to Mumbai, but Roma is still Rome.

If I had to guess, Roma is sort of a slur or at least has a negative connotation in Europe (i.e. another name for gypsies). So Roma describes a certain people with supposed mixed Indian blood and no homeland.

Their history is incredible. You could spend a lifetime studying it. I would not forget to also study the Eastern Roman Empire. Lots of good stuff in there, which helps you understand many of the issues in the Middle East.

Just the story of Belsaruis alone would make a great mini series/movie. With the tech we have now I would really like to see a Hannibal movie, A lifting of the siege of Vienna by the Poles ,and a telling of the real games of thrones,The War of the Roses.

Vienna is plumb full of history. Also sieged by the Ottomans.

The Ottoman siege is what I was talking about.

Really enjoyable show. Very high production values.

I’m always interested in the debate as to whether or not Alexander would have subdued the nascent Roman state if he had not died while heading back to Macedonia. Personally I think he would have curb-stomped the Romans but this seems to be the minority opinion.

I watched season one last spring. I liked the buddy dynamic between Lucius and Pulo, but didn't really get into the political intrigue portion of the story. The whole assassination of Ceasar story is just too well known. I would watch the second season, but there are so many series out their vying for your attention, it's just too tempting to try something new.

Depends on when and where they fought. If it was ground favorable to the Phalanx Alexander easy, if it was not perfect ground it would have been interesting. The one thing Alexander did have going for him that the Romans never did get a hang of was cavalry.

when alexander went south and east, instead of west...allowed for some 150 years of roman consolidation of former greek colonies/city states in southern italy and sicily. by the time the weakened macedonian greeks awoke to roman power, it was too late. alexander's descendants (diadoxoi) were more powerful in asia minor and egypt than in macedonia greece when it was too late.

when alexander went east...that's where the treasures (persian empire) and the grudges of the grandfathers (persian wars/retribution for attacking greek city-states) were.

i've been to italy and taking the train south to roma termini with the tyrrhenian sea on the west...the east was hills and miles and miles of wheat fields. rome could sustain a large population and feed a huge army.
