Rush told half-truths, lacked compassion, and demonized everyone he disagreed with. He was underrated as a conspiracy theorist, too. Not good traits for someone who wants to shape public policy. Intellectually immature and sterile rhetorical style. Extremely effective, though.

He was also the only conservative on the radio with a sense of humor, though he lost that somewhere along the way.

That's a big problem with most media, Sports Radio Hosts and Board Posters especially, too many lose any sense of humor they had when they started.

He denounced the Gay bit later in life and regretted it...it was 1990, pretty sure the bit would have been cool on The Score back then.

My dad was a Limbaugh Letter subscriber in the early 90's and he used to watch the show fairly regularly. I don't entirely trust my memory on this one, but I remember the studio audience being as rapturous and engaged as the old Mike Ditka Show audience.

He was the first guy I can remember adding name calling (Demorat, Femonazi, etc.) to our political discourse. At the time, it felt subversive and wild. When I look back on it now, it probably contributed a great deal to our coarse and profane political culture.

It's hard to blame one guy for something that is probably a societal problem, but his career generated more heat than light. I wonder if towards the end, he looked back on it and felt at least some level of shame or regret.

thing I loved about him was he had this uncanny way with words where he characterized the dems as dumb imbeciles.

Never failed to make me laugh

"They?"

Who are "they," and who are "you"? If you're not a wealthy denizen of Palm Beach Island who abuses prescription drugs and goes on suspicious sex holidays to the Dominican, why would I feel about "you" the way I feel about him?

Right. You got some secrets you wanna share Bobby?

I first learned his name around ‘93 when he had a late night TV show that a friend introduced me to during a sleepover. It was also the handle of a kid on a BBS I called. When I asked my dad who this guy was he said he scoffed and said “He’s a right wing asshole.” But later he would admit, “But he did give me national attention when he read my List of satirical Names of NFL teams.”

I listened to his radio show from time to time and occasionally he had a good point here and there. But Bob Grant was 100 times better and a more sincere conservative voice.

You had a friend that introduced you to Rush during a sleepover? That explains a lot

I was wondering for a second if we had overlapped on the BBS scene for a second but I was probably lymeone by the time you started.

I've never listened to a single word of Rush.

But the cheering based near exclusively on his political affiliation is fucking shameful. I know you don't give a damn but I'm pretty disappointed. This is pathetic.

I dont know. It was Terry's bit but I don't think cheering his death is appropriate either.
Even if it was his bit we shouldn't sink ourselves to that level.
Some people here are celebrating because someone on the other side is dead. That should disturb us.
