Very well done biopic of Fred Hampton and the Chicago chapter of the Black Panthers. Reveals some long-needed truths about their "militant" status, and exposes more of J Edgar Hoover's assholery. This guy just had it out for everybody, but especially black activists. It's kinda funny that Martin Sheen--typically playing very liberal political leaders--is doing a 180 by playing Hoover.

I'm sure the film takes some liberties with actual events but the death of Hampton seems pretty accurate, especially in how it goes down according to people on the inside.

The Judas character, Bill O'Neal, is very well played by LaKeith Stanfield (both he and Daniel Kaluuya were in "Get Out" together), and the position he is in a complex one. Interesting footage at the end of the film, too, and the coda text is very revealing.

Great film all around.

I'll never watch it again. Stirred up too many bad thoughts and memories. But it was so well made that I didn't notice the acclaimed soundtrack.

Bill O'Neal didn't do the right thing soon enough.

I just couldn’t get into it for whatever reason. Seemed well acted and shot but I guess I didn’t find it all that interesting. Definitely disturbing what happened to Hampton and the post movie explanation was nice so I knew how it all ended up. Surprised he was only 21 years old.

I don't think it's accurate to say J. Edna had a particular hard on for black activists. He held power for 50 years. Slice that up and you could see view him as having a hard on for any number of groups that were troubling america at any one time.

No, he had a particular hard on for Blacks stemming from his childhood. It's been reported that as his complexion and some features were of questionable origin to some, he was particularly interested in disputing that by holding extremist views and acted "accordingly".

Plus his Cointelpro correspondence showed the depth of his ill will.

Obama should've ordered the renaming of the FBI headquarters.

when i was reading about james wormley jones, the first black special agent (when it was just known as the Bureau of Investigation), and under hoover's authority when it became the FBI, he infiltrated the UNIA, specifically going after marcus garvey. granted, hoover had a thing about communism and there have been connections to communist propaganda spread throughout black communities in the early 20th century, it seemed more like hoover wanted to connect dots that probably weren't there, and nab the activists regardless.

hoover wanted everyone afraid of him, so he couldn't be touched.

So this is another one of the same day release in theaters on HBO. The first two I saw have been pretty brutal. The Little Things and Wonder Women were awful. This one has the leads from by two favorite Black Mirror episodes. So worth checking out.
