I assume you mean political talk radio by medium.

I don't think he would rank very highly if you mean all radio personalities.

No, I meant all irrespective of genre. At the very least he’s in the team photo (though probably not on the team for next year).

Who clearly outranks him?

Talent is hard to quantify

As far as making an impact, he's in the top tier for sure

I agree with this. And I'll say that Rush made me laugh more than Kevin Matthews ever did.

Everyone has a different sense of humor but I don't know how you could compare the humor of the two and make that statement.

Matthews was a mad scientist whose top work I'd put up there with the best I have ever heard. Unfortunately, I think he actually went nuts. In a strange relevance to this conversation, he was doing close to right wing radio at the end.

I cannot imagine too many people could create a co host, who then also got his own tv show. So bizarely funny

I always found Matthews insipid. Jim Shorts is idiotic and NOT FUNNY. Ed Zeppelin was stupid. Meier's Eddie Schwartz made more sense and was funnier.

But how do you control for taste in these discussions?

I understand you may not like Limbaugh, but you’re suggesting the most listened-to host in the US couldn’t crack the lineup at a middling classic rock station in the country’s 3rd largest media market.

Outside of Dahl, I never understood the appeal of any of the celebrity dj's on any predominantly music station. And I couldn't stand Dahl.

I loved Dahl and Brandmeier had his moments. But I think Dahl's ethic is what made Matthews seem phony to me. It always seemed like he was trying too hard.

That's the thing about Limbaugh. As was discussed above, I don't think he was genuine, but he made it seem like he was. I don't really think he hated Bill Clinton. That was just how he made his money. And unlike Dahl, I think he put a lot of effort into the production of his show, but it didn't sound that way. And I mean that in a good way. Rush just seemed like a guy commiserating with the listeners. He was never my thing. But he was pretty good at radio.

Stop with that argument. The overwhelming majority of his listeners are listening to the topic irrespective of the host and the Loop was not middling nor classic rock at that time (maybe it was WLS)

Greenberg and Golic were not the best sports talkers in the country. They were the most consumed.

by the way, Rush said his radio inspiration was Lujack

I just don’t agree with the first graph and it’s obviously unprovable.

What can be shown is that Rush cultivated an audience, maintained it and grew it over decades. He wasn’t in the Greeny role where some large corporation pushed him out nationally just because he happened to be in the chair at the time. The guy made his own path.

That may be so TODAY, but he invented- or at least perfected- the form.

The original social justice warrior. Father Coughlin had been off the air for almost 50 years by the time Rush started-up. I doubt he was a major influence.

You know Rush failed quite miserably at his (less than 3rd largest media market)radio forays prior to his full throated political style?

I get that you're a Rush fanboy, sorry for your loss.

Rush was a talented broadcaster who developed, cultivated, and commanded a large nationally syndicated audience for a long time. It's a great accomplishment. There is no shame in having that as a person's career, it's remarkable really, but there's also no reason to try and make it seem more grand.

His story was still fairly commonly discussed in the 70s and 80s, probably more so in the radio industry. He would've provided clear guardrails to a guy like Limbaugh.

I don't know. I only heard about him as a Nazi sympathizer, but the truth is he was more complicated. He supported FDR and the New Deal before thinking it did not go far enough to help workers and go after Wall Street. Clearly did not like the Jews.

Doesn't seem like Rush would take after him, but who knows? Rush seem more like a Steve Bannon type. Couldn't make it in mainstream entertainment so he went into the friendlier waters of conservative media.

Rush had a syndicated late-night talk show and it was a wet fart. Could not translate at all. Even Brandmeier made it out of the radio studio better than Rush did.

I wonder how much Rush's audience will change if he is replaced by someone using the same syndication network. If the audience remains static, that is an indictment of his star power rather than the power of the niche subject matter.

I cannot imagine whoever is in charge of it will just let it die out.

Premiere, which is Clear Channel, had been syndicating Rush, but Cumulus had been trying to get out of the Rush business for years now: https://www.robertfeder.com/2015/03/05/ ... -limbaugh/

Quote:
Rush Limbaugh, who’s been a fixture on WLS AM 890 for more than 25 years, is about to get the bum’s rush from the Cumulus Media news/talk station, sources said Wednesday.

If all goes as planned, Limbaugh’s syndicated talk show, which airs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, will be dropped by the end of March, according to insiders at WLS.

Six years later and they're finally going to get what they wanted, which was to stop being held hostage by his show. But talk about missing the boat -- there was an opportunity to reimagine 890 post-right-wing talk, but not only is it too late for that, it's too late for AM radio as a whole. They may as well sell it and run it as a 50,000-watt clear-channel brokered ethnic station.

hes on fox news a lot. maybe has his own show on on their side thing.

I use to be ok w/ him when he first started as he would share some of his secret service insights on how things work in politics. Like in 2008, he was assigned to Hillary while the other agents had Obama and the other agents would tell him 'this guy's going to win'. He didnt believe it but the other agents on the Obama detail told him how big the crowds were for Obama.

but now he's towing the fox news company line whenever I tune in. this will probably be 100x the fact now since he's filling in for rush.

btw...He looks part African but he has some kind of hang up whenever asked if he's mixed. He denies it vehemently instead of just saying no.
