I went into that Mages store several times over the years.

His son was involved with the original Irving's in Wilmette. That was positioned to be a big deal with several locations (they used to advertise at Bulls games to the Highland Park sweater club) and just flamed out massively and only the original is left as of a couple of years ago.

Unless it was recently, I think the sporting goods store (it later became part of Sportmart, RIP) had the whole building. But I don't remember if there was another building between Mages and the flophouse motel at Ohio and LaSalle.

I just remember that I walked through that American Girl store to get to the elevator to go to my dentist. It was a fucking nightmare.

I think there was an office building just to the south.

Morie Mages was the best when I was a kid. They had cool displays so you'd want to walk the different departments just to see them. They had this indoor skiing contraption where you could test out skis before you bought. My dad used to take me there for gym shoes and they always seemed to have a promotion where you got a free poster with a purchase.

Was Morrie Mages where the Stretch Run OTB went in or is that a block over? I just remember all the celebrity handprints. I assume they're still there.

As a kid I always dreamt of going in there with a shopping basket and hitting every floor.

I shudder to think how much I spent in there with my sons. I doubt any visit there was less than an hour.

M.C. Mages is where my dad used to take me to buy a new baseball glove. Always a Mizuno.

Would have been mid 90s or so for me as well. I didn't go down to the city all that often but that was one of the spots to hit along with Nike Town.

I remember the early 90s when I was still playing a ton of hoops and would head to Nike town every six months or so to buy new shoes. Crazy how back then you had to go to Mag Mile to find any decent selection of basketball shoes. They had that mini court where you could try them on and test them out a little bit. most people are there for fashion and I'm on that court running shuttle runs to test the shoes.

I remember that vaguely. I was working part time at Foorlocker in Gurnee Mills from about 93-95. They got some of the new shoes up there but it was mostly unloading crap in the back for really low prices. The full time guys would let me use their 40% off discount to buy new stuff so not a lot of reason to go down too often. It’s not like today where they have so much limited edition stuff. I just designed my own custom Air Force One shoes online late this fall and they delivered to my front door for not much more than a regular nice pair of shoes. I thought that was really cool.

Are there any high-end department stores left that could fill the space? Maybe they should turn into condos. Target would be a horrible fit.

Don’t the people on the board that live between there and Wrigley need a Target?

Their liberal “ payment optional” policy has been a huge hit down there .

Our Target was remodeled and it sucks. There are huge spaces where you need none there is no space in aisles and it's like products are blobbed around the store and it seems like they have less stuff. I understand the concept of making it to fit the neighborhood but it fails to do that too. Any target I stop into should be easy to navigate and almost the same. So dumb to change it.

Sounds like they are open, but now operating differently.
