this place's slowdown has more to do with 670's fall than the board itself. No one under age 40 is listening to 670. My generation is pretty much exclusively listening to podcasts and consuming other digital content rather than terrestrial radio. The station is simply not fun and is trying desperately to appeal to my generation but can't figure out what we want. If the station wants to know how to reach the under 40 sports fan, take a look at a certain company that has successfully reached them and is growing profits and revenues each year, including this one with a drop in overall ad dollars across the industry.

Look at Dave Portnoy. He knows the formula and has succeeded where the rest of traditional and digital media have failed.

Don't be fucking woke crybabies. Be irreverent, unapologetic, and entertaining. That's what we actually consume. 670 is pitching to people on Twitter thinking that's what the general consensus is.

This board declined because 670 lost its way. Has there been a single moment in the last 5 years that has even come close to "Chicken Little"

I think it's also a pretty big deal that we lost two all time great posters in Kid Cairo and Keeping Score yet we had to keep Terry's Peeps.

That's why we're recommending that Kap start his own version of one-bite pizza reviews. Mindy is on her way to the studio with a large pie as we speak.

Peak I would say was when ESPN was transformed by Mac into legitimate competition for the Score. North, himself was trying to transform the Score into right wing sports talk while Bernstein was starting to emerge. There were plenty of things to discuss, both good and bad, from morning drive all the way to 10 pm.

I would say the #1 item that caused diminution of the board is emerging social media, first in the form of Facebook and then Twitter. On air talent was forced to acknowledge this place back in the day. The smart one's participated in the board. However, at some point that shifted. They saw these other forms of media where they could still reach their fans beyond on-air while still controlling the narrative (unlike here where they were as likely to be ridiculed as praised). Mac himself, at some point, openly championed Facebook over posting here.

People on line also gravitated in that direction as they saw the opportunity to get an e-pat on the head. Younger people are also less inclined to longer form discourse so the disposable conversation or Twitter fit their style.

Anyway, I just don't understand the lack of enthusiasm for boards but that's the way it is. I like the topic format and the mutation of the original topic as the thread continues. I like to read thoughtful ideas that cannot be framed in 150 words. I would think others are out there who do as well.

people come to the board when something newsworthy happens on the two radio stations or to the sports teams. Since neither of those things seem to happen anymore, we've devolved into politics.

Get a controversial radio guy or a Bears team worth following, and this board can grow again.

Peak of the board is still MJH vs B&B. Always will be too, doubt there'll ever be two shows like that competing again.

This is why I consider every new member somewhat precious. And why I dislike the immediate and reflexive mult accusations that greet any new account, even though I know it's a longstanding board tradition. I don't want the board to devolve into being just me and Boilermaker Rick arguing about whether Ted Cruz or Zach Edey is the greater Canadian icon.

I hope Seacrest and The Division don't mind me relating this story. It involves PMs and I would never share a PM conversation, but the story itself is pretty funny. I don't think either of them will mind.

I received a PM from The Division asking why his prior account/screen name had been deleted. I didn't know so I asked Seacrest about it. He said it was a mult that someone created to make fun of him. The previous screen name was "Trash Can". So I told The Division why he was deleted and he seemed puzzled. I told him Seacrest was an old time dustman and he thought you were a mult making fun of him. The Division laughed. He was a long time lurker who had moved to Houston and "Trash Can" was a reference to the Astros.

probably around when The Score was still a fun station to listen to. So probably mid/late 2000s.

I remember the website to get here score670.com or something. or 670thescore.com. The score didnt even have the naming rights on the internet to it's own station. BigFan made some good money selling that I'm sure.

2016 Cubs WS run also peaked.

Nah, the decline of Chicago sports talk radio destroyed this place. In particular, the Score's shift from cultivating a populist image as "the voice of the fan" to embracing its identity as a corporate propaganda arm that echoes the view of local team ownership while constantly criticizing or demeaning fan culture alienated listeners and suppressed traffic to and participation in this site. While the Score's neoliberal turn came well before 2008, it wasn't until this time that sports radio listeners--and the American public more broadly--began to revolt against this ideology. In response to this reaction, the Score has redefined its general attitude from a kind of elitist or reactionary neoliberalism to an "inclusive" or "progressive" neoliberalism that attempts to connect with the audience via cultural identity even as it continues to reinforce the hegemonic corporate power structure and class-based social hierarchy.

In any event, politics is just about the only thing keeping the board alive, however faintly, at this point.

what i put in bold - yes, good observation - very accurate

when the talent and radio station sucks and nobody listens, then this place is going to suffer too.

I often ponder whether a guy like Oil Can Boyd made enough money in his modest yet above-average career to live on for life.

Baseball-reference states he made $4MM by age 31 and retired.

I know that should be enough to invest and live on for life. But....did he? :-|

What dolphin and JORR said above. That about sums it up for me. Also what JORR said a while back about this place being a community.

I tried to join this board like 18 years ago, but Biggie wouldn't approve my registration. I didn't really read much until about 2012 (unfortunately), but dolphin's description of the early board as "a bar you might get knifed in" seems pretty accurate.

Even in 2012, it was pretty awesome. It was like every poster was the old Terry Boers-witty and with a lot to say. I had about five or six accounts from 2012-2015, but could never make any headway because the place, even then, was thriving and full of intelligent people, besides Brick.

I hope we can get some more quality posters, or some old posters come back, even sporadically. With so much of social media being policed, you'd think that we'd get some more posters--writers, thinkers, really--here. We're pretty free here, and that allows you to be honest and to try your ideas out and get real feedback, for those who have the energy to offer it. You'd think that this freedom would be attractive.

And I am of course aware that some posters do feel like they are outnumbered (for lack of a better word) here on some issues and topics, and I know that it must be tiring. Hopefully, they recognize the value their voices bring; hopefully, they stay, because the board might veer off into another direction next (the way it went from the Score and MJH to politics and culture wars).

It's the sports teams.

Look, the Illini have the best basketball team in the country and this place is poppin' lately.

If the Bears were interesting in any meaningful way, people might actually listen to sports radio and this would compound threads here on both sports and radio.

Same with the Cubs and Sox.

Bulls have no real identity that the tangential fan can latch on to. If you asked most people in Chicago about Zach LaVine, most would probably think it is a Wrigleyville Bar.

The Hawks never really got things moving beyond the hard-core fans a few guys like me that would watch some playoff games.

The Bears, Cubs and Sox move things - regardless of who is playing for them. If they have a couple breakout stars included it just multiplies the effect.

The Bulls need a star to be relevant.

The Hawks have a popularity ceiling that doesn't change much.

Sports radio is just a by-product of the actual product on the field/court/ice.

I also tend to agree that age is a factor. I thought I was one of the older ones here when I joined at 35. I don't think message boards are very relevant in today's information superhighway environment.

This guy gets it.

how? is there a cfmb on facebook or twitter?

I just heard Weinstein and Peterson discussing the value of sex on a podcast. Prior to female birth control and the sexual revolution, sex was a commodity that was difficult to obtain for men. Thus men had to compete for it and the most capable and masculine won. But birth control allowed women to have sex like men and reduced the value of female companionship giving rise to the beta male.
