it was fucking $4 a year ago. besides the portnoy hype machine is there actual data to agree with this valuation? i know their online sportsbook has been doing well but it's only in a few states right now.

The stock's rise has been in line with analyst price targets, which have continually been raised over the last 6 months.

A lot of it is based upon expected growth as they will be in 10-12 states with the sportsbook by year end and can expect their traditional casinos to rebound.

In addition to that, more states are going to legalize sports betting as they need the revenue and see other states cashing in. The big one to watch this year is NY.

As for Barstool's competition in the sportsbook arena, they don't have to spend much on marketing. Barstool, DK, and FD may have similar takes on the initial weekends but Barstool does it without the 9 figure ad buys that the other companies are doing each quarter. Barstool's marketing department is essentially their media platform which is profitable on its own according to Penn's most recent quarterly results. Everyone is spending money on customer acquisition while Barstool makes money while acquiring Penn's new gaming customers for the app.

That's why people are betting so heavily on Penn to be the big winners in this space.

seems like you're paying for assumed future successes today at the current price.

That's the story with the entire industry. If you look at Draft Kings stock, it's the same thing there except for the fact their road to profitability is steeper due to the fact they cannibalize any cash flow from their gambling operations with customer acquisition costs

I just read the year end report. By nearly any traditional metric, the stock is way overvalued. But you have a few very important things going for Penn.

1) Legalized online gambling is just getting going, and these guys are going to get a large piece of that pie. Unlike building giant casinos and financing them with debt, this business will benefit from very low marginal costs. They are going to make large returns on invested capital as more states expand.
2) We are coming off a year when nearly everything was closed and operating at low utilizations. They still posted decent Q4 results.

I am not saying the stock is a good value. But the company looks well positioned from a resumption of normal times and the longer term growth in sports book gambling.

In case Ogie is short on blue chew, I thought this part of Penn’s earnings release might help get the blood flowing.

“ Barstool Branded Retail Sportsbooks Exceeding Expectations

“We have seen very strong results at our properties since the Barstool rebranding of our retail sportsbooks at Ameristar Casino Black Hawk, Greektown Casino Hotel, Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg, and Ameristar East Chicago. Our Indiana retail sportsbooks generated record handle, revenue and EBITDAR during the fourth quarter, which has only accelerated following the rebranding. For example, sports betting handle at our Ameristar East Chicago property increased by 35% following the rebranding versus the prior six-week period, while table games and slot volumes in the adjacent Barstool-themed gaming area increased by 27% and 26%, respectively, during the same period. We believe this demonstrates the ability of our Barstool-branded retail sportsbooks to attract younger guests to our casinos, which can help drive significant growth in gaming and non-gaming revenues from new demographics. We expect this momentum to gain speed when COVID restrictions are lifted and we are able to host more Barstool events and personalities at our properties. Our plans for 2021 include rebranding several additional retail sportsbooks in our portfolio, beginning with the Pennsylvania properties in the first half of the year.

Barstool Media Reach Growing

“The value of Barstool Sports as a media company is an overlooked part of our story,” said Mr. Snowden. “Our valued partners at Barstool experienced an incredible year in 2020, as they continued to produce highly-engaging and relevant content for their growing audience of loyal fans despite the partial shutdown of live sports. Barstool Sports now has over 26 million followers on TikTok, close to 27 million followers on Twitter, and more than 52 million followers on Instagram, just to highlight a few social media platforms. In 2020, Barstool saw very impressive year-over-year growth, recording its strongest revenue and EBITDA since its inception, and we expect Barstool to continue to grow profitably over the upcoming years through a diversified mix of advertising, brand licensing, and merchandise sales. We view Barstool Sports not only as a fantastic channel to promote our offerings, but also an undervalued media asset that has evolved from primarily a sports brand into a highly relevant sports and life-style brand. We are excited about the opportunity to unlock additional value in Barstool Sports as they continue their strong growth trajectory.”

That micro thin crust isn't for everybody, but it's a pretty good version of that style of pizza. You combine that with the history and the "ambiance" and you get the status it currently enjoys.

Anyone remember the original Shakey's Pizza? This Barnaby's talk reminds me of Shakey's. There was one in Merrillville around 30 and Broadway. The all you can eat Bunch a Lunch was outstanding. Had to resist the urge to load up on Super Spuds and stay on track to maximize value with the pizza. Used to go to a Barnaby's around Riverdale or Dolton, maybe Calumet City. Same vibe without the all you can eat. Both better than Sanfratello's.

The Barstool Pizza Critic thinks that using cornmeal to slide the pizza off the peel is "unique"?

I'm beginning to suspect that he's not the incontrovertible authority he appears to be.

Pizza is subjective. Everyone knows a good burger from a bad one but pizza has the variables of crust, sauce, and how it's cooked and how long it's cooked. Sometimes I may want a crispy crust, sometimes I may not. Sometimes I may want a sweeter sauce, sometimes I may not. Sometimes I may give Barnaby's a 9, sometimes I may not. All I know for sure is Little Caesers is the worst no matter what mood I'm in.

Sometimes you want several $5 pizzas for a bunch of kids - that’s the Little Caesars mood.

Same goes for Jacks. What do you WANT for 3 bucks? It's pretty damn good for $3 and the exact right size for a 175 lb adult.

Jacks earned that 0.08 score last year.

None of the above addresses the fact that using cornmeal on the peel and crust is pretty common.
