I read what Jorr wrote and have debated it myself. There is a large important difference between prejudice and racism. And I find it very hard to be believe that true racism can exist in America against white people. There is a massive power imbalance. And while you may be able to point to specific examples where the power is the other way, white people control most of the levers of power in this country.

I mean, can a white person be racist against another white person? Oh I dunno anymore.

The power is what makes it racism. If someone hates you because of your immutable qualities and it has no effect on your life, so what? That's bigotry. But once that hatred can be and is used by someone in power to make decisions that really affect you, it becomes racism.

Attaching power to racism turns it into an ever shifting word without any real meaning. The same behavior can be both racist and non-racist, depending on the context.

Who decides how "power" is defined in the "racism = bigotry + power" equation? Is it a macro-scale definition, like which group has the ability to do the most, or micro-scale and situation-dependent, like a store owner and customer? What about people with little or no "power", are they still capable of racism because other people that look like them have "power"?

Do you see how clunky this new definition is, and how quickly it is rendered absurd?

Why do you say that? Why does the concept of race exist in the first place?

Bigotry is not solely linked to immutable qualities. If Denis decides he hates Jews, he’s a bigot. That most Jews happen to be white (which presumably, Denis is as well) doesn’t matter. There’s nothing about religion that’s immutable in the traditional sense of the word.

My point was that that has changed in a hurry. Your last sentence is almost certainly not true right now. Don McNeil worked at the NYT for what, 30 years? Highly respected, but an old white man. He did not have power to get Nikole Hannah-Jones fired. The opposite was true. Strom Thurmond isn't standing up in Congress refusing to confirm a qualified black candidate that JFK proffers for a cabinet position. It's Tammy Duckworth doing that to white men. Who has the whip hand?

Scenario A: A customer walks into an ice cream parlor and attempts to place an order, the store owner who is behind the counter refuses to take his order, saying the store doesn't serve people of the customer's race.

Scenario B: A customer walks into an ice cream parlor and attempts to place an order; the store owner who is behind the counter asks the customer to put on a mask as per COVID guidelines, and the customer goes nuts, calling the store owner a racial slur.

Who has the "power" in each scenario? Does one or both scenarios feature racism? In either scenario, is whether the actions are deemed racist dependent on the race of the individual actors?

‘Easily defined’ is the foundation of language. There are many perfectly good words that describe the exercise of power over an ‘out’ group - oppression being a great example. Those words just don’t carry the same sting as racism.

Far as I can tell, redefining racism to include ‘power’ is a means to give cover to the ‘white people are evil’ crowd.

That’s literally what we’re both doing - arguing the meaning of a word. I’d agree that bigotry based on race = racism. Just like I’m sure you’d agree that Denis’ hypothetical bigotry based on religion would be anti-semitism, but not necessarily racism.

Things get weird when we get into the ‘race is a social construct’ yet ‘society is inherently racist’ dynamic because it takes a fundamental reimagining of words as we know them.
