They may be showcasing him for a trade to a bad team.

They had 4 guys competing for 2 middle spots, since they are keeping Matt Duffy around to back up 1B/3B (and effectively RF if Bryant goes out there to give Heyward a day off). The guy with the option left was going down unless everyone else fucked up.

Plus, this way he can get reps every day at SS until they trade Baez. He will eventually be the starting SS, or get dealt if they reach an extension with Baez.

Spiegel told listeners this morning the narrative that Hoerner was sent to AAA because of service time is incorrect. Hoerner was sent down because he wouldn't be able to get consistent playing time up in the big leagues. I have a funny feeling the Cubs told Spiegel to tell listeners that.

I don't think Nico is going to be some kind of all star year to year. He'll be a good serviceable player . This was a business move. I don't think he's a 5/150 buy but maybe something like Bote got 5 mil for 5 years. Maybe he's 10 mil for 5 years kind of guy if he works out.

Hoerner is Ryan Theriot with fewer brain cramps.

Sogard is the eventual 2B for May-July. They have to be nice to Bote now and let him lose the job, but really he is indistinguishable from Matt Duffy except Bote has more power and hits well with RISP.

The reality is that Sogard, Bote, and Duffy have more value as either throw ins to another trade, or people who can stand at 2B/3B/1B once the current starters get traded. Hoerner has more downstream value as a SS post-Baez, or else if they extend Baez they will deal Hoerner to Oakland who has Elvis Andrus standing at SS and seriously considered giving AB to Tony Kemp at 2B.

If anything, this off-season proved you can get a #8 hitting 2B for virtually nothing in the off-season. Hell, you can get Yolmer Sanchez from Baltimore this week if you agree to pay for the catering of the team meal for Opening Day.

Nico Hoerner may have scorched the baseball during Spring Training, but the ball tends to go very far in the dry air & higher elevations in Arizona. This decision to send Hoerner down has a lot to do with overall development than anything. They're going to claim service time, but I think the Cubs want to see Hoerner continue to learn in the minors before they bring him back to the bigs at some point. Hoerner hasn't proven that he can hit, and that's what the Cubs want from the 2B position this season. If you go inside the numbers, Dave Bote has actually been much better at second than third base statistically...Albeit in a very small sample size. The jury is still out on where Bote settles in long term and I think the same is true for Hoerner. If the Cubs don't re-sign Javy Baez, I can easily see Hoerner back at shortstop instead of second base.

Plus, breaking balls don't break as easily there. Will Nico be able to drive those same pitches when executed on a humid day in Chicago?

That may also explain Joc as well, if anything he proved that the Dbacks should have an interest in him next year.
