Guppy
Pederson
Dempster

Three of the most hatable Cubs of all time. I can see myself taking a pass on the season..I havent done that since the first year of the strike.

For fucks sake, just sign Dempster and this will be the most unlikable team in my lifetime. The guppy sucks, he has always sucked and already stole tens of millions from the team.

he was too hard headed to throw more off speed pitches. even w/ his time in SF. they wanted him to use his curve more but he was more about fb/cutter. too bad because i think he would be a much better pitcher if he mixed his pitches.

Evan Altman on R & G this morning. Mentioned Joc Pederson is the Cubs "biggest deal" position player signing since Jason Heyward. So, no big $ on position players after Heyward? Tells me there was tremendous conflict when Rickets wised up JH was a bum. To navigate the free agent position player waters timidly after getting burned by JH speaks volumes.

he is good. Spring training doesn't indicate that though. It doesn't indicate anything.

.191 career hitter against lefties

He is a good platoon player.

He came to the Cubs because they were willing to let him start against lefties for at least the first half of the season to see if he could improve against them. They went through this with Rizzo, who was really bad against lefties at first and fought his way through it and figured it out.

Personally, I don't see it with old Joc, but there's little harm this season in hitting him 6th or 7th against lefties depending on who is catching.

most likely scenario is that he gets traded in July

he has power against RHP, can field all three OF positions and has lots of playoff experience

I really like the signing. Given enough at-bats, I expect him to perform better against lefties than Kyle. And he plays better defense.

Sometime, we should reconstruct the 2017 Cubs. A team where Schwarber is gone, the Cubs get an actual leadoff hitter, acquire Verlander, don't trade for Quintana, et al.

Someone smarter than me get on that.

Yes. Re-construct a team that sucked until the AS break, then lost in the playoffs. If Schwarber is gone, the Cubs can't acquire Verlander.

Good thing people that are smarter than you are on that.

Uh, did you see the garbage that Detroit took in return for Verlander? Any team in MLB could have put together a comparable package of non-prospects.

That is my point. The Cubs couldn't part with "Babe Fucking Ruth," and instead gave up Eloy and Cease for Quintana.

Well to me the point is that the Cubs could have easily done the Quintana AND Verlander trade.

The Quintana trade and the Heyward contract are the two clearest affirmative misses of the Theo era, but I think the omission error of not trading for Verlander is the biggest mistake by far.

what are you talking about?

Verlander would have been a Cubs with or with out Kyle. Kyle could have been traded for Andrew Miller. Start there. Fulmer was also a guy the Cubs could have gotten for Kyle at the start of 2017. Cubs then would have kept Soler and Eloy.

Verlander was an unforgivable mistake, So was D.J and Soler. I don't mind moving Eloy, just not for a 4th starter and throwing in Cease who is a better pitcher than Q. Soler is servicable in the OF, Eloy isn't. Both will hit 40 hr a year.

Lot of revisionist history going on with Soler. There was no outpouring of " OMG why are they letting him go" when he was traded. He came up, looked pretty good then couldnt stay healthy. NO one was aghast at letting him go like they just traded Mike Trout.

Im a fan, not a scout or a GM. I absolutely pined for Verlander though. Soler is pretty much the same guy as Eloy..lil better glove though. Schwarber was the worst of the three, who they kept. I was pissed when they traded DJ for that sack of shit.

Maybe they should have traded for Verlander, but that's ignoring the fact that Houston had Gerrit Cole's ball doctoring goop guy that was a big story this offseason on staff and the Cubs didn't. Sure, maaaaaayyyyyyyyybe, he just needed a change of scenery and be in playoff race to get going again, but more than likely it was the increased spin rate he got from doctoring baseballs on Team Cheat.

I didn't mind the Soler trade. I'm not sure who deserves the bigger blame, Theo for not trading Schwarber or Joe for leading him off and wasting him for a year. Eloy, obviously that was a bad trade but it remains to be seen, much like Soler, if the guy can stay healthy.

The Verlander non-trade was the knife. What a dumb non-move.

Of course, you don't have to make those lopsided trades if you DEVELOP YOUR OWN PITCHING. Which by and large marks the Theo era most distinctly.

Example number 53,619 that hitting well in spring training don’t mean shit . DFA this piece of crap and let a prospect play the rest of the year .
