With the Cardinals losing last night, the magic number for clinching just a playoff spot-not the division-is now 17!!! It's funny how you don't realize just how dominating this team has been, because the Brewers have been very good this year as well and staying fairly close to the Cubs. But when you look at the wild card race and see that the next team closest to the Brewers is the Cardinal and they trail the Cubs by 11 full games, you can see how dominant they really are. Even if they had a losing streak and the Brewers go on a run like the Rockies did last year, the Cubs should easily get the wild card. 85-50 vs the Cardinals 74-61. The next closest wild card contender, is the Phillies at 73-62, who trail the Cubs by 12, for the wild card. So these victories over the Phillies are that much more important. Again, the magic number for the playoffs-now just 17 with 27 games left. All the Cubs need is to win 10 out of 27 and have St Louis lose 7. Its a done deal. They are in, the big blue train is steaming down the tracks and gaining speed. They can start giving guys like Z some extra rest soon and get their rotation perfectly set for the playoffs, without worrying about making them. But they do want home field advantage. As they are 32 games over .500 at THE SHRINE, so they can't do those things just yet....
