Nice effort by Williams today. I felt like taking him out after 6 would have made sense. He looked done at that point, with a nice double play getting him out of a jam in the 6th. Real nice effort by Mills in the 9th. Nice to give Kimbrell a day off after 2 straight. Real nice to see the bats come alive a bit. Really liked the triple by Sogard. Tough pitch with 2 strikes and he goes down to rope one into the corner. Too bad they couldn't get him in afterwards.. so far, so good.

Sogard was the starter all along, Ross is just deferring to Bote's contract and tenure to let him play himself out of the job. They will need Bote in August once Bryant gets traded, as they have nothing resembling a 3B prospect in their system.

Thus, Matt Duffy on the bench and Nico at the alternate site getting reps at SS for when they launch Baez into the sun. It gives Ross an excuse to do what he did last night, showcase Bryant in RF (which is where he will be playing full time in a couple of years for some other team) and get Heyward a night off.

All in all, I like Ross' moves. I'm disquieted by the fact that he needs Mills to pitch the last two days, because if Alzolay shits the bed today there's nobody to pitch long relief. Hopefully he's planning on DFAing Rex Brothers and bringing in a long guy from the alternate site, or maybe Strop is close to game ready and Ross is just buying a week.
