Hamilton is odd man out when Engel comes back. Engel is your defensive sub and basically plays the role Hamilton is now with a little less mayhem on the basepaths, but it wouldn't matter as Engel would do more with his bat.

Despite all the talk about analytics in scouting, you still see how the negative (and positive) biases still attach to players and don't get shaken. Mercedes has been killing it at AAA for what seems like years. Yet the Sox couldn't find time for him to see what he had even at the end of non competitive seasons. They tried their best not to have him on the roster even this year.

A lot of other teams did the same.

probably every single one of them

specifically in regards to mercedes, I don't think he hit as well in the minors elsewhere as he did for the Sox. The guy's numbers screamed for a chance but the scouts still considered him a non prospect.

and I know, Keyser always said don't scout the numbers.

As I wrote above, it works the other way as well. Top prospects are given their shot until they prove they are bad.
