You'd think all the people that didn't want their kids to go to Proviso would be enough to keep it open.

Amid the current COVID pandemic, with its severe impact on the finances of many families, and
the serious fiscal burdens St. Joseph High School has experienced during the past several years,
as well as our steadily declining school enrollment, the Board of Directors has reluctantly made
the recommendation to the Christian Brothers to cease operation of St. Joseph High School at the
conclusion of the current academic year. After a comprehensive review by the leadership
council of the Christian Brothers, the recommendation of our Board was accepted.

I thought Catholic Schools had waitlists thanks to parents fed up with closed public schools?

I used to love wrestling against St. Joe's in high school. Easy win every time. St. Joe's guys were kind of bulky but unskilled and out of shape. Proviso East was much tougher--more skilled, more disciplined and generally in better condition.

Sad. IHM closed about 15 years ago and Divine Infant closed 2 years ago or so.

Divine Infant is a great name. Reminds me of Our Lady of the Westside. A Virgin with cred.

That is what Fenwick, Naz and Montini are for.

It was convenient for the surrounding communities and lower cost. IHM had a good percentage of people from around midway too.

Montini cheats so bad but they knocked my alma mater (Sycamore lol) out of the football playoffs four (?) years in a row. Sycamore also got them the last time in the semi-finals. Good, hate the Spartans.

I had several relatives go to St. Joe. The older ones are pretty upset, the younger ones less so. At its peak, they drew from pretty far south/southeast, pulling even from Summit and Clearing.

About a year before Pingnatore died, one of my relatives said "If Ping dies, it'll close, he's the only thing that keeps it going these days, and the brothers won't close it while he's still coaching.". Pretty much nailed that one.

My view of that guy was entirely informed by Hoop Dreams and it was impossible to think of him as anything other than a grifting sociopath.

I turned down a job as the head soph football coach and head girls track coach there 13 years ago. I would have taught World history. I was amazed they couldn't even match what I was making at a Catholic grammar school at the time.

My mom and Gene were cousins, met him a few times at family parties. Think I mentioned it before, but I had a friend from college stay over thanksgiving break who was from Cody Wyoming, hugely into high school basketball and watched Hoop Dreams a bunch of times. We saw a St Joe’s game with him and before the game Gene came over and said hi to us all and it was like the coolest moment of this kid’s life.

I’m not sure he grasped how poorly he came across in that movie.

It was weird to watch Hoop Dreams. St Joe's used DI's church for graduation and I have so many little and big memories of being in that church. One of the only times I've been embarrassed in my life, first time I remember liking a boy, some of my family's funerals, and wedding ceremony.

That movie would have cancelled him if it was released in this environment.
