Vaughn can't field the position. The roster really is a mess. Developing guys while "going for it" means you are only doing one.

Neither can Eloy. So give Vaughn at chance to show what he can do at the plate. If he hits enough, you find a way to keep him in the lineup.

Vaughn in left isn't terrible. I'd play him there and spell him in the late innings as they have been doing. Granted, I'd rather do that with Engel being the guy going in as at least Engel can give you a decent AB if it comes around to him on the other half of the inning.

The emergence of Mercedes has of course impacted Vaughn and Collins chances to get ABs as the plan was for each of them to take some DH days. It's not a bad problem to have Mercedes taking DH at bats considering how awful production was in that slot last year.

Its the same thing as Eloy should do. Play deep and don't take stupid risks.

There's no reason for Nick Williams to start.

Vaughn misplayed a ball in one of the West Coast blow-ups. He’s also not hitting, and Mercedes looks like your DH for now. Hopefully going forward as well.

I agree Vaughn needs to play or be sent down. Nick Willams starting is weird, but LaRussa has his old school quirks.

It’s a tough standard to bench a rookie if he’s not hitting well in his first 5 games in the league. At this rate, he might as well be sent down when the minors get going in May.

I haven't been disappointed in Vaughn. He is seeing the ball well and the hits will come. He has taken a lot of walks, which is rare for a rookie. His OBP is .400

It's not like he is chasing everything out of the zone and swinging at awful pitches as someone who is lost at the plate would.

Even after the few games out there, I can tell he's better than Eloy. The fly ball he blew, he shortarmed it, he didn't misjudge it. That's an experience play, not a "I'm a dork" Eloy play.
