When I was a young guy playing in my earliest bands, my two biggest influences were Van Halen and the Sex Pistols. I tried to be an asshole just like those guys. I would chug whiskey straight out the bottle and get fucked up like Roth did. Then I read an article in Rolling Stone that detailed Van Halen's show prep. It talked about Roth emptying his bottle of Jack Daniel's and refilling it with iced tea. Talk about disillusioned! Here I was trying to kill myself for the glories of rock and roll and this pussy was fake drinking Jack.

I know when I would go to a concert as a younger guy we would pregame and drink a bunch. I can hardly remember one time I ever got through a concert without a piss break. I am amazed at all the hard drinking rockers that did their whole show without one.

No bigger Dave-era Van Halen fan, but if memory serves, the story goes: DLR was asked about The Clash at the press conference for the US Festival. He said something about how they would be would a decent band if they had a better drummer. Something like that. On stage during the concert, DLR took a huge swig of Jack and proclaimed, "The only people who put iced tea in Jack Daniels bottles is The Clash baby!!!" and then Al goes into the intro to Jamie's Cryin'. Basically, Dave started shit with The Clash for God only knows what reason.

Also, while getting paid a record one million bucks to perform at the US Festival, the band, especially Dave, was shitfaced. Not gonna say he drank anything but Jack, but DLR's reputation for being completely fucked up for shows is pretty legendary. I know there was some schtick where he'd conveniently "forget the words" at the same part of the same song, so some of it was fake, but the dude loved to get fucked up.

And yes, I know this post was very SHARK-like, but I couldn't resist.

he had his drinks and maybe he got a little overboard. he was well supported if he was an alcoholic. but i don't think he was as it seemed to not effect him in his daily life. his job was to call a ballgame, i mean nobody gives a shit if he slurred some games because the cubs sucked for the majority of his tenure and most people were there to party at wrigley rather than pay attention to the baseball played on the field.
