a Netflix semi documentary (maybe half is theatrical) about the FBI investigation of the scandal

It focuses on Rick Singer and the people in college admissions more than the parents who were willing to pay for admission.

It's an interesting look into the mechanics of the scheme. He essentially found vulnerabilities in athletic programs, whether that was in funding or in salaries for coaches in fringe sports, and manipulated them to have a number of assured spots in schools. It reports that coaches in an array of sports have almost unfettered discretion in getting their recruits in to schools. I have always suspected this was true since my days of seeing a few high school friends from Loyola getting into Ivies to play football/baseball despite being below average intelligences.

I never understood how these ultra wealthy parents whose children are failure proof would care so much about where their child went to school. I think the testimony of the independent college advisors explains it well: the admissions process is really a vanity project for many parents.

If you are a first time parent in the process and have a junior in high school, enjoy the show and the heart palpitations that it will cause. I think those of us who have been through this understand it is an absurd game based almost entirely on illogical and unsupportable perceptions. One of the independent college counselors describes it well in looking at the root of the word prestige, meaning a deceit or lie.

One question that I have always returned to during this entire investigation is, why USC? It really doesn't provide an elite education, offers very little aid, is one of the most expensive schools in the country yet kids apply to it in massive numbers.

I didn't know Singer was from Lincolnwood. 60646 REPRESENT!

In conclusion, it's an interesting and quick watch. Matthew Modine does a great job in the theatrical portions.

Evidently in Southern California, USC carries quite a bit of local academic and professional cachet. Especially in entertainment.

It's funny that you mentioned heart palpitations. I had the exact opposite reaction to it. The movie is about a scandal, but it's the type of scandal that makes you feel superior and doesn't induce a strong emotional reaction. Perhaps if I had college age children I would feel differently.

In addition to USC, I've also had questions about UCLA and Georgetown. Are these schools so good that it's worth it to lie, cheat, and steal to get your kid into them? When I was a younger man I thought Georgetown was just the D.C. version of DePaul or Loyola. I've come to learn that it's regarded as more elite than those schools, but is it really in the same zip code as an IVY, U of C, Northwestern, or Stanford?

Not quite undergrad, but definitely with law school

I think Georgetown is more akin to Notre Dame, just a bit more elitist on account of the location.

The location really gives it some unique advantages in foreign service, international politics, politics, law, etc. Students can intern when kids in other cities are drinking their nights away. The grad schools are filled with people who are currently holding positions. It also allows for great instructors/adjuncts/guest lecturers.

It wasn't always that way. I've said before how my dad got into Georgetown and Saint Joseph's College in Indiana back in the day. He chose SJC.

I mentioned this when the story first broke. One of my best friends grew up with Singer in Lincolnwood. They used to call him Jelly Belly.

Here he is as a youth:

Apparently all the greats from QAS attend St. Joe's College. My neighbor when I was a kid, QAS and Niles Notre Dame Hall of Famer Bobby Feltz was a star pitcher for St. Joe's.

Niles West is prep school for arch criminals: Rick Singer, Merrick Garland, Ninos Gorgis, Jeffrey Erickson, and my partner the attempted murderer.

Jorr how is it that you're involved in some ancillary way to pretty much every scandal and crime in this state?

Do you think my family was dropped off the boat at QAS?

My parents are from St. Viator's parish on addison. My mom grew up in a two flat across the street from Kilbourn Park. Our blood only turned blue recently.

I didn't go to SJC although I loved going there with my family for football games and homecoming in my youth.
