Obviously a “number one” is not an ace. Scherzer is an ace. Kershaw was an ace. Pedro, Unit, Maddux etc...those were true difference makers.

Hendricks is a number one by default. Darvish had ace stuff but couldn’t string it together for even a full season.

Cubs offense is a mess.

Les took 2 great back-to-back calls last night. Doug from Quad Cities, and Northwest Side Joe. Both passionately crying about the Cubs.

Hendricks reminds me of fellow soft tosser Mark Buehrle. When they're right, they're great. But when they're off, they get rocked brutally hard.

i listened to spiegel yesterday and he was in that camp. spiegel said he wasn't fooled by cubs one game hitting explosions the past 3 years. he said yesterday he believes the cubs have turned a corner because they seemed to collectively hit to the opposite field/take the ball up the middle. all that based off saturday's game with the braves.

i'll give his opinion a week.

if you can't hit fastballs, there's no corner to turn. The fact that they're going oppo just shows that they can't catch the speed but they can read the pitch.
