Why did the school have a codeword for "Lockdown"?

They said the Principal went on the PA with the codeword for "Lockdown".

Honest question. What is the purpose? Can't they just say "Lockdown"?

The schools I taught at had one so the kids would not panic. Get 'em in the classroom first and then tell 'em. Of course, a man with a gun wandered by 64th Street one day and I locked us in my classroom and they didn't tell me a damn thing until after school. Not real helpful, but we had a quality discussion about music.

Plus, not to get all Dave Chappelle on it but wouldn't the most potential threats know all these codes already?

I'd go with a Riker Star Trek "RED ALERT!!" and test be a "GREEN ALERT!!"

I suppose it depends on their age.

The code word was to call a long-dead teacher down to the main office. I remember hearing his name and mentioning to the class, "Man, my brothers hated that guy." A few seconds later, it registered, and I quietly locked the door and then told them to move away from the windows, and why. Come to think of it, I wasn't supposed to tell them why (I was not supposed to discuss 9-11 while it was happening, either), but I obviously did. All in all, it worked.

Even if the shooter knew the code word, the announcement would still give nearly everyone the opportunity to take cover and lock themselves in a room.

One time we were on a golf trip and we get to the first green and he just runs to his cart, jumps in and yells I gotta go and then headtails it back to the clubhouse. Me and my other buddy had a 30 minute chipping/putting contest on the first green while we waited. Thankfully the course was empty so it was no big deal for us to sit there that long.
