I don't really think that there's a "Great" American band, but the best of the bunch seem to be Skynyrd, the Dead or Ramones.

The Cars were really good, though.

Jokes aside, yes, without a doubt better than 95% of the bands on this list (maybe all save for Skinnerd).

Sorry, "Jam Bands" are horrible. Thank God Pink Floyd kicked Syd out of their band so they could go on to write some of the greatest albums of all time.

If we are going to talk cultural institutions with questionable skills as musicians the I am taking KISS every day of the week over The Dead. The helped influence and create one of the most amazing sub genres of music ever while The Dead helped influence and a few unlistenable jam bands.

Dude. KISS is one of the worst things to have ever happened to music ever. Gene Simmons is literally one of the worst human beings that ever lived.

I'd say Steely Dan but even they would say they're not technically a band.

Syds Floyd was a completely different animal than Gilmour's. It wasn't bad or crappy just a whole lot different. That being said I'm clearly in camp Gilmour. But syd wasn't garbage.

Over rated? Dude I get that you might not dig their music but they were spectacular live. It's not easy to improvise around a melody for an hour. I frigging love the dead. Their studio stuff to me is meh but the live recordings are remarkable.

Not seeing thr original post to this?

"Spectacular" is not the word I would use, though I'm sure they were occasionally spectacular. They could also be dreadful. But that's all part of the package. No two nights were ever the same. They were more about the vibe. A show could be great even if it was uneven musically. They're really one of a kind. There are others that have tried to pick up the mantle, but no one has really done it. I saw them four times. They were radically different each time.

You're a moron

Would love to see the brainstorming session Grand Funk had when coming up with the idea for the song ”We're an American Band".

These 10 are pretty good. I’d argue that Aerosmith, Journey, Metallica and maybe the Beastie Boys could work their way into a few of these slots. Three ‘90’s grunge bands being there might be a stretch but if you go top 20 I’d say all 3 stay. Foo Fighters also probably in the discussion whether you think they’re bland or generic.

Yeah. I could have made a top 20. I like all the bands you mention. And the Ramones are probably my #11.

And if I went top 20, Alice In Chains, Cheap Trick, and the Replacements would have all been in there. Phish and the Grateful Dead, too.

Grand says "hey we're American" Funk Railroad says "we're also a band". The rest is herstory.

Not sure if they would make the top 25, and they may not have a thick enough catalog to consider, but I really feel like the Stone Temple Pilots have a solid case to be in there. If you take a look back they have some significant contributions, during the 90s anyway. I agree with Quad City Dope mentioning The Beastie Boys as well. Maybe not technically "rock" but definitely as American a sound as anything else listed here.

The Grateful Dead are very good, but Wilco's best songs are better than the best songs by the Dead.

Here's my current Wilco Top 10:

Jesus, etc
Impossible Germany
One Sunday Morning (A Song for Jane Smiley's Boyfriend)
California Stars
Via Chicago
Handshake Drugs
Poor Places
Misunderstood
How to Fight Loneliness
Heavy Metal Drummer
